  • Great to get down a mine and see the workings. Also checked out devining rod and it worked. That was scary. Loved the seams of opal in the walls.  more »
  • At Tom's you see an actual working mine and the tour is by one of the miners themselves. And you get to have a crack and finding your own gems. A must.  more »
  • We had met our family in Coober Pedy and we decided to go on this tour close to town. The adults were aged in their 60's and 30's and the children are aged 11, 10 and 4 1/2. This is a family run worki...  more »

  • Would highly recommend Tom's working opal mine if you're passing through Coober Pedy. We ended up spending most of an afternoon here. It was a great experience to see all of the equipment working and to have a go at using the divining rods. The kids loved it!
  • If you do one thing in Coober Pedy, make it this! Wonderful tour explaining everything I wanted to learn about opals and mining. Included a live demonstration of various mechanical tools and machinery.
  • Nice mine. Good tour. Price is ok for the length of the tour. Good and interesting installations.
  • Great place to experience, and explore how they live and mine opals. Interactive tour, our tour guide Ben was great, the kids had many questions, and all were answered very well. Well worth the visit
  • We had the best tour guide! She was the essence of Coober Pedy. She was warm and approachable, ultra-Australian, a little hungover but still had an excellent sense of humour. We heard a few bad luck opal mining stories that seem synonymous with Coober Pedy. We learnt of the techniques and saw the various machines used to dig out the underground tunnels. I would recommend this tour. It is informative, inexpensive, easy to find, and fascinating.
