Explore how miners lived and worked during the opal mining times in early 1900s. As you walk through the cave and tunnels at Old Timers Mine, you will see old pick marks and even streaks of opal that have been left in the rocks. You can visit an underground house used by the miners that now displays a collection of opals and various artifacts from the mine's history. Outside, try your hand at the old manufacturing process with an interactive session using a pipe to filter the stones. The gift shop features polished opals and jewelry. • This is a well thought out self guided look at an opal mine and actual underground home. One surely comes to understand some of the trials and tribulations that the early miners had to cope with.
  • Was really good kids loved digging for opals. The two guys at the counter very friendly and good with the kids. So worth stopping in for a look.
  • Real good experience, self guided tour was real good. the demonstration was a bit short but still informative
  • Great spot for kids! Worth a look at if your in town!
  • Wasn't too interesting for me. I like museums but this one should probably be visited with a tour-guide who can tell you more about the backgrounds of this mine. Prices are alright (15$ pp for an unguided tour).
  • One of the friendliest and most interesting places we've been to on our trip. Lovely and helpful owners who are very much experts in their field, and really care about the museum and Australian/Coober Pedy History. The tour is fun, and at the end you can go 'mining' by yourself. And if you find something of value, and you ask Trevor really nicely, he may take you to his workshop and show you how Opal's are processed. I strongly recommend this to anyone passing in Coober Pedy - one of our trip's greatest highlights
