  • We came to Castlemaine for the Jazz Festival (Queens Birthday Weekend) and the old mess hall at the gaol and the cellblock have been converted into venue settings. Fantastic atmosphere .  more »
  • Our tour guide Christine was very nice and packed with great information. It was awesome looking around and going in the prison cells to see what it was like for prisoners.  more »

  • The Gaol was closed when we attended today being Wednesday. We hadn't planned the visit today however we were able to park the car & take a walk around the outside. You get a great view of the town down below as it sits right up on the hill.Looking through the website it does state it's closed Tuesday & Wednesday.Maybe next time?
  • Good place nice views...an amazing to be on a sunny day...staff is very friendly, it's built in a prison castle so can go for prison tour as well. I would like to see more food options there
  • Love it here. It has a unique telaxed feel about it. Overlooking the town of Castlemaine there is lovely indoor area in the old gaol, and an open spacious outdoor area as well as an outdoor bar. The food is delicious.
  • Great views from outdoor seating. A bit pricey but very good location and friendly staff.
  • Dreadful signage. Didn't know where to enter or buy tickets from! Just happened to be someone who looked like a cook from the cafe' wandering passed us & saw that we looked a little lost & told us to buy our tickets from the girls in the cafe'. Seems to be more aimed at patronage for the cafe' & evening entertainment or functions. A bit sad really, as it has amazing heritage & should still be run as a regular tourist attraction. Inside was mostly amazing, but sad to see so much either locked up, the jail cells were being used as storage rooms, blocked off or set up for something else. Very disappointing in many ways, it has so much potentionalin the gaol itself. It wasn't always obvious where & where not you could go. You get an eery sense of what it would have been like as a prisoner (to a degree) back then (mid 1800's etc.). The prisoners main exercise yard was lovely, considering (with fruit trees planted there). Took lots of photo's. I am always amazed at the architecture of these gorgeous buildings. Still worth a look.
