  • It's surprising how many Canberrans use the National Library as a quiet haven... I've used it to study, to meet friends, to read a quarterly essay, for lunch... and many others have a similar sense of...  more »

  • Great collection! Librarians are reasonably helpful. I would give this place 5 stars but there are a lot of questionable looking people hanging looking dodgy. Very nice building in a very beautiful place.
  • First time visitor. Asked librarians in the lift and the foyer of level one where I could read. Two librarians said I could use the special reading room. Read here for two hours. Went out for a break and returned to a balding, later age man briskly and enthusiastically stepping out from behind the desk to block me from walking further. ‘Do you have a card’. I said no and I’ve been using the room all morning. He said I should leave. I continued to read. After 30 minutes he came to my desk, closed in to my face and said ‘I told you to leave before. You have to leave, NOW’. He had the look of smiling pleasure in his eyes as he attacked me. Sadistic, ugly man. Even another older man beside me was uncomfortable. I didn’t bother anyone. I was a sole younger female user of the space. Of course a white aged man jumped on the chance to tell me off. Restricting spaces in busy periods is understandable. Other librarians accepted my presence. Just reaffirms the dominance of older males in every precious space of this city. I can’t summarise my repulsion towards this awful white man. As a security guard, I’ve handled people with more tact and respect. You purposefully attacked a younger woman, with obvious satisfaction, and that makes you an extremely ugly person.
  • One of Australia's national treasures, the National Library of Australia has a copy of every publication produced in Australia and is therefore an archive of our national literary culture. It also has brilliantly curated exhibitions and has an excellent on-site restaurant. An essential destination for a pilgrimage by any culturally-minded Australian.
  • More of a museum than a library. You aren’t allowed to bring in bags, and there are limited power sources for you laptop. Overall a bit annoying if you were planning on a day of study. Despite being beside the lake, the study area is very dim and offers no views whatsoever. The best areas of the library are VIP (very important old white person) access only.
  • The National Library is one of Australia's great institutions! Whenever I contact the National Library I always get very helpful and courteous advice. Also, the ability to look at old newspapers, magazines, manuscripts, etc, free of charge, prompts me to give the NLA a five star rating, as it is undoubtedly one of the best libraries in the world!
