Australian National Botanic Gardens, Canberra

4.4
#2 of 10 in Nature in Canberra
Explore the many paths at Australian National Botanic Gardens. They will take you through the national collection of Australian native plants, including banksias, grevillias, and callistemons. The main loop is about 1.5 km (0.9 mi) of mostly flat terrain and well-marked paths. The glasshouse features ferns and pitcher plants, while the treetop walk and gully boardwalk showcase the colors and sounds of the rainforest. Birdlife is abundant (honeyeaters, wattlebirds, and even a Satin bowerbird). It is not uncommon to also see wallabies and echidna bumbling about and lizards sunbathing on rocks. • My dad raved about this botanic garden, saying it was much better than Sydney's. He's a horticulturalist too so he must know something about that! I love it, it's small yet many options to go on the s...  more »

  • Beautiful gardens, you have to pay for parking however the proceeds go to the friends of the botanic gardens. The bookshop has an amazing range of books and gifts. The flora and fauna is diverse, make sure you take your camera!
  • I'd recommend visiting the botanic gardens when it not the hottest. As most of the park gets quite hot. Except for the rainforest, where it is rather cool even in the hottest day. If you were to visit the botanic gardens on a hot sunny day that's your go to place to cool off.
  • Fantastic gardens to visit with no entry fees but pay parking applies. Recent trimming of overgrown trees has opened up various areas to benefit sunlight, bird life and visitors alike. Well worth a visit.
  • The garden is pretty good, but the tour guide we had was the highlight - very sincere, patient, and informed. We were lucky enough to get a private tour since it was a bit rainy and I suppose everyone else stayed home! A true delight. Also visited the cafe and got some delicious food with him afterwards. It was nice of him to join us. The food was absolutely scrumptious and well presented, but quite pricey. The put the non-vegan parts on the side so my companion, a vegan, could eat. I liked the soy hot chocolate too. I recommend checking out the rock garden area and the indigenous plants. Unfortunately, parking is paid.
  • Well kept and cared for Australian gardens. Very good range of plants. Great contrast to the public buildings of Canberra.

Where to stay in Canberra

To stay comfortably near most main attractions in Canberra, choose a hotel in the city's central district. If you're a bit more budget-minded, look for a guesthouse in a neighborhood farther away from the city center. Residential areas offer more parking and quieter rooms at a fraction of the price charged by big-name centrally located hotels. Rental apartments spread across Canberra serve as another cozy option and offer lodgings ranging from simply furnished to luxurious five-star properties.
