Australian National Botanic Gardens, Canberra

4.4
#2 of 9 in Nature in Canberra
Explore the many paths at Australian National Botanic Gardens. They will take you through the national collection of Australian native plants, including banksias, grevillias, and callistemons. The main loop is about 1.5 km (0.9 mi) of mostly flat terrain and well-marked paths. The glasshouse features ferns and pitcher plants, while the treetop walk and gully boardwalk showcase the colors and sounds of the rainforest. Birdlife is abundant (honeyeaters, wattlebirds, and even a Satin bowerbird). It is not uncommon to also see wallabies and echidna bumbling about and lizards sunbathing on rocks. • I'm a plant nerd, so my perspective on the ANBG will not be,.... umm, usual, necessarily, at least not unless you're also a plant nerd or similar. This place has a huge diversity of native plants, man...  more »

  • Exquisite. Beautiful shaded areas interspersed with sunny meadows, fabulous range of plants and climate zones. The artificially cold-misted rainforest gully is unbelievable. See pictures. The visitors centre too, very bright, clean and well staffed. A top quality cafe. Walk through to start the steep climb up to the top of Black Mountain. Fabulous.
  • Took the tour "bus" and it made the whole experience much more pleasant on a 30+ degree day. Guides are volunteers and ours was friendly and full of both plant and historical knowledge with respect to the gardens. She was lovely and the gardens were, in parts, beautiful (note that I'm a fan of the forest more so than the bush look)
  • Great place for a stroll awesome for kids with nice wide paths for strollers, also has great little pathways through the gardens too. Cafe is great and full of native animals, we had a possum come right up to our table then wonder away.
  • I’m giving 5 stars because the gardens are very well done. The volunteers were very helpful and we got to see a lot of great plants and learned a lot. The bookshop is also very good
  • Beautiful gardens. Very enjoyable inexpensive day out. Get back to nature. Relax in the cafe and the reptiles were well worth a look in. Educational and hands on. Thanks guys for sharing them with us. Great day.
