Australian National Botanic Gardens, Canberra

4.4
#2 of 10 in Nature in Canberra
Explore the many paths at Australian National Botanic Gardens. They will take you through the national collection of Australian native plants, including banksias, grevillias, and callistemons. The main loop is about 1.5 km (0.9 mi) of mostly flat terrain and well-marked paths. The glasshouse features ferns and pitcher plants, while the treetop walk and gully boardwalk showcase the colors and sounds of the rainforest. Birdlife is abundant (honeyeaters, wattlebirds, and even a Satin bowerbird). It is not uncommon to also see wallabies and echidna bumbling about and lizards sunbathing on rocks. I find the sign was confusing. Beside that the garden are marvelous and the plants are gorgoues. If you like to relax yourself and emerge with the nature I recommed this place.  more »

Very careful, with different varieties of vegetation and forests, you can walk for hours, connected by a path with the Black Mountain.

There's something for everyone here. You can wander around for days checking out the whole place or go on themed walks including the fantastic rainforest gully. The cafe is very good and the discovery center has great exhibits and a well stocked book and gift shop botanically themed of course!

Absolutely fantastic place.. I've been there for fun, work even a memorial. The staff were respectful and terrific to deal with. Can't recommend them enough.

Terrible service. Asked for a juice for my son and I was told they don't have any, when I could clearly see some behind the person who served me. Said the kitchen had closed at 2.10pm and it's the school holidays. Quite rude and laughed at me with the juice incident. If you are taking the money, provide some service. Never coming back. Do not recommend it!

The botanical gardens themself are awesome. The restaurant Pollen is an absolute disgrace in service. They told us they cannot make any changes to the menu which included not having cheese on kids spaghetti! They said if you are allergic order something else. The spaghetti was cold and possibly came out of a tin and the biscuit it came with was old and dry. They also interrogated us to ensure we had children to buy a children's meal. Feeling dissatisfied! No value for money.

A great place to rediscover the plants. Ample parking (paid). Informative free tours. Area is large but can tailor to how much walking you want to do. A smaller kids trail made it fun for the little ones. Several areas which are nice for picnics. Washroom clean. Water bubblers available. Cafe which can get a little crowded.

Where to stay in Canberra

To stay comfortably near most main attractions in Canberra, choose a hotel in the city's central district. If you're a bit more budget-minded, look for a guesthouse in a neighborhood farther away from the city center. Residential areas offer more parking and quieter rooms at a fraction of the price charged by big-name centrally located hotels. Rental apartments spread across Canberra serve as another cozy option and offer lodgings ranging from simply furnished to luxurious five-star properties.
