Stayed in a room with a kitchenette, so fruit and bought and ate in the room. Additional mature think you have what it takes, to their first visit. We bought a green mango and custard apple. Custard apple in texture, such as la France well ripe, mango and a rich sweet taste like it was. Visit us on the morning of the homecoming, and stocking up the pork buns and pies for lunch dinner. There are plenty of souvenirs, cheap and cute bracelet. Fast food shop in the food court at the was closed. Bathroom is clean and secure.

Whilst in Cairns took a walk thru Rustys one Sunday. The produce on offer looked fabulous, however it was the eating options that impressed even more so. Thai, Korean, Japanese, Vietnamese, Crepes, Ba...  more »

As markets go it is a bit same old but the range of fruit and veg is well above the norm. It's not often you see things like galangal, yams, taro and cassava on sale. The quality of produce ranged fro...  more »

  • Locals tell me that Rusty's has lost some of it's shine over the years, but is still a good place to get cheap & good vegetables and fruits if you know where and how to look. There is pretty much no other place in Cairns where you can find such a huge variety of greens, especially for Asian or Italian cooking. Forming good rapport and long term relationships with the vendors also help, if you are a local. Getting past the tourist crowd can sometimes be a bother! The food stalls are generally a disappointment, except for Yokoso at the Sheridan Street end, and Stanpol at the Grafton Street end. There are also a few stalls selling things like organic produce, crystals, potted herbs, coconuts, massage, artisan bread etc. Not all the stalls are open throughout the weekend, but if you do go on a Saturday morning then you're more likely to find a larger variety. During the summer months, vegetables wilt and fruits over-ripen very quickly in the heat, so go look for produce further in where they are not exposed to the afternoon sun. If you visit near closing time on a Sunday (2-3pm), you will find plenty of sharp discounts as vendors are trying to move their stock. However, you will find that the produce will spoil rather easily compared to if you purchase them on Friday - so choose wisely.
  • Best and true tropical north shopping experience to be had. Sample some of the most exotic and exciting tropical fruits and native veggies around. Nothing beats home grown local produce. Zibrant atmosphere where locals catch up for a yarn and tourists get a taste of our multicultural diversity. Great tourist attraction in itself.
  • The best farmers market we have in Cairns with an extensive range of local tropical foods. Many people do their weekly food shopping here! Also foods from down south are also found here so the variety of produce is great!
  • 5* for the superb coffee stall. I bought their chocolate flavored blend. Absolutely delicious! "Coffee Works" is the stalls name, they're against the wall besides the only bakery. The rest of the market: fruit & produce - ordinary.
  • Open Friday Saturday and Sunday from around 5 am. Located next to Gilligan's. Plenty of exotic local fresh produce. Numerous places to purchase good food and coffee. Not many stalls for craft, jewellery or clothing.

Where to stay in Cairns

Though Cairns seems to offer an endless selection of cozy rooms, most budget-friendly options remain fully booked through the high season, stretching from June to September. Reserve early if you want a hotel room packed with amenities, or look for alternative lodgings in the city's smaller inns. As the backpacker capital of northern Queensland, Cairns features dozens of economical hostels providing comfortable beds and free Wi-Fi. For something far more luxurious, look for centrally located rental apartments with spacious rooms and harbor views.
