A visit to Green Island will bring you to the tropical paradise on the Great Barrier Reef. Just 27 km (17 mi) offshore from Cairns, this small, sandy island formed on the surface of a coral reef. Snorkel and dive in the cool waters over colorful coral and sealife. Go on a glass-bottom boat or semisubmerged submarine to see the underwater views of starfish, turtles, shells, and fish. Follow the boardwalk through the thick, emerald rainforest to reach the crocodile farm. Rent a locker for your belongings at the island, so that you can explore the place without worry. • Well looked after and good facilities. The island is well managed and the sea life is amazing. An easy and safe way to experience the GBR with your family.
  • Cute little island. Gets very busy with tourists. Lots of cafes (a little pricey), a nice pool and amenities, easy walking tracks. Holding the crocodile "Fluffy" at Marineland Melanesia was my daughter's highlight of the island. Unfortunately we went on a rainy, overcast day and the boat ride was really choppy and the day was less enjoyable than it could've been. Heaps of people got sick on the boat getting there (50 min ride). If I went again, I would not pre-book but wait until the night before to ensure good weather.
  • Awesome experience. Great place for a day trip and nice clean beach. It was over crowded but the fact that it's an small island it is inevitable.
  • Amazing. Rich sea life. Sea turtle dwell in the waters near the beach.
  • Most amazing vacations I've ever had. Price reflects quality of the place. Enjoy day trips while the packs of tourists invade the island and then get the island to yourself and few hotel guests during sunset.

Where to stay in Cairns

Though Cairns seems to offer an endless selection of cozy rooms, most budget-friendly options remain fully booked through the high season, stretching from June to September. Reserve early if you want a hotel room packed with amenities, or look for alternative lodgings in the city's smaller inns. As the backpacker capital of northern Queensland, Cairns features dozens of economical hostels providing comfortable beds and free Wi-Fi. For something far more luxurious, look for centrally located rental apartments with spacious rooms and harbor views.
