Esplanade Lagoon Pool, Cairns

Esplanade Lagoon Pool offers one of the best places to beat the Cairns heat. Look out on the Barrier Reef and Trinity inlet from this 4,800 sq m (51,666 sq ft) saltwater lagoon. The lagoon water is saltwater from the inlet run through a filtration system. The sandy perimeter provides material for sand castles, and kids can wade in the lagoon's shallow water. To relax, recline on the timber deck beneath a shady tree. To visit Esplanade Lagoon Pool and other attractions in Cairns, use our Cairns tour planner.

  • A great place to spend a few hours. Our flight was delayed from Cairns airport so we came to the Lagoon and chilled out for a few hours. Plenty of shade, the water is clean and perfect for swimming. Lots of shops, pubs, restaurants and cafes nearby. Well worth a check out!
  • Gorgeous place for a swim of any age. Sandy beach going into the pool for kids, infinity pool edge looking out to the water, lots of grass around the edges for resting or hanging out. Absolutely gorgeous place!
  • I can't believe a facility like this is free for public use. It is a wonderful pool with a view that is simply one of a kind - especially the bird life (wink wink). If you visit on a Saturday, be prepared to share with free water aerobics classes! It's fun to watch though... :)
  • Best place to chill in Cairns. Well-maintained and clean grass, free pool with lifeguards, free barbecue facilities, free WiFi and often live music. If you have nothing to do during the day you have no excuse for not being here. During the night the place seems deserted, it seems like a lost opportunity.
  • Great spot for the whole family! Cairns would be a very bland place without the esplanade facilities. An abundance of playgrounds, green space and the lagoon is a great safe swimming spot.

Where to stay in Cairns

Though Cairns seems to offer an endless selection of cozy rooms, most budget-friendly options remain fully booked through the high season, stretching from June to September. Reserve early if you want a hotel room packed with amenities, or look for alternative lodgings in the city's smaller inns. As the backpacker capital of northern Queensland, Cairns features dozens of economical hostels providing comfortable beds and free Wi-Fi. For something far more luxurious, look for centrally located rental apartments with spacious rooms and harbor views.
