#2 of 14 in Shopping in Cairns
Stay up late at Cairns Night Markets, popular with tourists from around the world. Open late each night of the week, these markets are a collection of stalls catering mainly to foreign travelers, with vendors selling clothes, handmade crafts, souvenirs, food, beverages, and jewelry. Inspired by similar markets found all around East Asia, Cairns’ night markets were created as a convenient way for local merchants to satisfy the growing tourist demand for inexpensive but well-made local products. Today, you can visit over 130 stalls at a pleasantly air-conditioned shopping center, located on the city’s popular Esplanade. • What a wonderful night it is a food market where you can taste food from the restaurants and suppliers from around the area. prices are between $5 -to $10 a plate. The food was delicious with the walk...  more »
  • We had read of the markets and were directed to this location. It is airconditioned. Plenty of food outlets, mostly Asian it seemed. Plenty of stalls and outlets selling souvenirs, products mostly rep...  more »
  • Small indoor market with small stands clearly aimed at tourists. Who searches that can be somewhat kitschy souvenirs is right here. Massages are also offered, also are the only that more or less "offensive" on one to go, otherwise you can stroll relaxing. At one end there is a small food court. Man buys a plate in the desired size and then filling it at your whim with food. Since we've not tried it I can unfortunately say anything about the taste and quality. In short, small tourist market with air conditioning and without intrusive seller

  • It is Cairns. .I have no complaints. . When you come to Cairns from the USA you will understand. This place is nothing like a tourist beach town in the US...this is still a civilized country.... when an Aussies says "no drama" they mean "no drama" ... you will get this anywhere in Cairns
  • Great experience when in Cairns! Good variety and eating options, though mostly on the sweeter side. Draws a crowd, which adds to the buzz. Recommended
  • Great place with a brilliant nightlife atmosphere. Good place to buy souvenirs, get cheap dinner, or relax with a massage. Unfortunately there isn't much else. Always busy at night. It is best to come at least half an hour after opening time because the stalls take a little while to open in the afternoon.
  • Retail evening markets. Many different types of things including a glass blower and jewelry maker. Massage therapy students and asian food court.
  • Busy place, lots to see. I've never ever come across so many ice cream shops before. I swear you had one almost every 50 meters. If you like knickknacks then this is the place for you. I couldn't find anything i wanted to bring back for the kids though.

Where to stay in Cairns

Though Cairns seems to offer an endless selection of cozy rooms, most budget-friendly options remain fully booked through the high season, stretching from June to September. Reserve early if you want a hotel room packed with amenities, or look for alternative lodgings in the city's smaller inns. As the backpacker capital of northern Queensland, Cairns features dozens of economical hostels providing comfortable beds and free Wi-Fi. For something far more luxurious, look for centrally located rental apartments with spacious rooms and harbor views.
