Flea Market Shopping
Stay up late at Cairns Night Markets, popular with tourists from around the world. Open late each night of the week, these markets are a collection of stalls catering mainly to foreign travelers, with vendors selling clothes, handmade crafts, souvenirs, food, beverages, and jewelry. Inspired by similar markets found all around East Asia, Cairns’ night markets were created as a convenient way for local merchants to satisfy the growing tourist demand for inexpensive but well-made local products. Today, you can visit over 130 stalls at a pleasantly air-conditioned shopping center, located on the city’s popular Esplanade. A visit to Cairns Night Markets represents just the start of the adventure when you use our Cairns travel itinerary maker to plot your vacation.

  • The markets are smaller then I expected. I had also heard how great the food was. 90 % of the food is Asian style; not much variety. There were a few cool stalls, but a lot of generic touristy things....  more »
  • In a nutshell, go if you have nothing better to do. I think they are trying to copy Mindil Markets in Darwin and some of the Asian ones but it doesn't work.  more »
  • The night markets are your typical market fare and atmosphere, there's nothing special about them, and they're hot and noisy. Go there anyway, just to say you've been.  more »

  • Loved this market for shopping for souvenirs and hand made stuff. Didn't try the food but it's clean and not too over whelming compare to other night markets. Not too crazy about it being indoor. An outdoor night market would have been wonderful hence the three stars. But a must visit if you are staying in cairns.
  • This market is a great mash of different cultures coming together to form a unique aspect of Cairns. I think every tourist should take a few minutes time to see this and hopefully experience some of the miscellaneous cuisine. Def worth it.
  • Prices are reasonable. Great place to get cheap souvenir. Also great place to have cheap dinner. Usually fixed price and eat as much you can fit in a plate.
  • The night markets are good to look at before or after dinner. It has an adjoining food court and a heap of desert type shops at the entrance. The markets had 4 double sided rows of stalls. There were alot of souvenir type shops, some over priced. Some well priced clothing shops, pearl and opal jewellery, hand crafted items and massage. The fish doctor was quite the experience with a 20 minute stint with your feet in an individual fish tank. This is said to clean away any dead skin.
  • Somethings never really change, many of the same vendors and traders for decades. Most things are overpriced but they are targeting the tourist market so you have to expect that. Usually well maintained and plenty of food options around. You can get a petty decent cheap massage though.

Where to stay in Cairns

Though Cairns seems to offer an endless selection of cozy rooms, most budget-friendly options remain fully booked through the high season, stretching from June to September. Reserve early if you want a hotel room packed with amenities, or look for alternative lodgings in the city's smaller inns. As the backpacker capital of northern Queensland, Cairns features dozens of economical hostels providing comfortable beds and free Wi-Fi. For something far more luxurious, look for centrally located rental apartments with spacious rooms and harbor views.
