Fairymead House Sugar History Museum, Bundaberg

4.0
Fairymead House is a heritage-listed homestead at Thornhill Street, Bundaberg North, Bundaberg Region, Queensland, Australia. It was designed by John Shedden Adam and built in 1890. It was added to the Queensland Heritage Register on 22 February 2002.HistoryFairymead House, a grand plantation home, was built on land adjacent to the Fairymead Sugar Plantation, Bundaberg, in 1890, for Ernest and Margaret Young. Ernest Young and his father Henry and brothers Arthur, and Horace, established one of Bundaberg's earliest independent sugar plantations and processing mills, the Fairymead Sugar Plantation. The origin of Bundaberg's sugar industry dates back more than 100 years to the introduction of the Sugar and Coffee Regulations Act 1864. Faced with the high cost of importing sugar from overseas, the Colony wanted to find a way to encourage people to invest in sugarcane growing. The Sugar and Coffee Regulations Act 1864, was introduced into the Queensland Legislative Assembly by Charles Coxen, member for the Northern Downs. The proposed regulations of the Act permitted persons or companies to select land suitable for sugar in lots ranging from half a square mile to two square miles. The introduction of the Act brought about a renewed interest in sugar cane growing and people raced to accumulate land up and down the coast of Queensland.

  • What a special house to visit to appreciate our early pioneers in the sugar industry in Australia. So much hard work long ago by Italian migrants who gave so much to this country. Must see!  more »
  • Lovely welcome. Fascinating history! Amazing that the house actually was relocated here! Photo’s show it in pieces and how the move was made.  more »

  • This is well worth visiting to learn more about sugar cane and the processes involved in turning it into sugar for everyday use. You are able to try some fresh sugar cane juice which tastes totally different to what you would expect and is really yummy. The house is massive and is a great example of homes that were around years ago. The only down side is the limited opening hours in comparison to Hinklers Hall of Aviation which is also in the Botanical Gardens. Make sure you check out the opening times and prioritise your visit so you don't miss out especially if you don't have much time in town.
  • Wonderful place to visit. Lots of information about the sugar farming, mill work and machinery. Worth seeing.
  • Great place to visit but the opening times are advertised wrong. We turned up on Sunday at 12.30 to find it closed. But on the site it says it's open until 5pm
  • Very informative museum of the sugar industry in a large queenslander homestead.
  • Great visit. So much history in the place
