Japanese Cemetery, Broome

(3.9/5 based on 200+ reviews on the web)
Discover Broome’s interesting history, based on the exploits of the men and women who developed the pearling industry in the 1880s, by joining a guided tour of Japanese Cemetery. The riches taken from the sea did not come easily, and this historic cemetery is the resting place of more than 900 Japanese who lost their lives diving for the precious pearls. Many more were lost at sea, and the exact number of deaths is unknown. With its rows of simple headstones, the cemetery is a humble reminder of those intrepid immigrants who lived and died trying to conquer Australia’s seas. • Just a quick visit to pay respect. Unable to read the headstones as the wording isn't in English, however, a beautiful place and well maintained.
  • A little walk from the city centre. Large cemetery in the Japanese cemetery is the corner. Grave of the Meiji era. Minimum service had no other visitors has been felt.

  • Beautiful! Some graves dating back to 1914 from what I could understand and the biggest Japanese cemetery outside of Japan! Apparently.
