Customs House, Brisbane

4.0
#7 of 21 in Historic Sites in Brisbane
Architectural Building Historic Site
Heritage-listed Customs House, originally built in 1889, underwent a full restoration in the 1990s, which included a complete reconstruction of the central staircase from locally sourced timbers. Expert craftsmen worked from original plans and designs, found in the State Library’s archives, to replicate the original construction as precisely as possible. This landmark building is known for its distinctive copper dome, black and white marble interior features, and an iron balustrade with the initials VR (for Victoria Regina) wrought on it in honor of Queen Victoria. No longer used as originally intended (for the collection of customs duties), the building hosts regular concerts, lectures, and special dinners, and includes a restaurant, function center, and an art gallery, located on the bottom floor. • Went here for my first high tea experience on the weekend. Apart from the view, it was very disappointing. Firstly, all the pots of tea served were not hot, they were obviously made with lukewarm water. We informed the waitress who promptly replaced our pots. Not a great start considering we were there for high tea. The raw sugar cubes were dished up in a bowl that had chips around the rim - surely whomever filled the bowl would have seen the chips and thrown it out? I was the last person to pay in our group of 11 and was almost hunted down for payment, even though we were all still sitting at the table. I rang to voice my concerns 2 days ago and was assured the restaurant manager would ring me yesterday - still no call. I called again this afternoon - still waiting.... Hmmm, not a great experience.
  • Customs House is a wonderful example of early Brisbane architecture. It is standing alongside the Brisbane River & one can enjoy watching the boats from the back terraces. The exterior of the building is made of sandstone & has a beautiful, excellently renovated & well preserved interior. It stands amongst lots of restaurants & coffee shops in the business area of the city. We can all be proud of this well known Brisbane icon.
  • Great food and great service. The views are brilliant. Many Thanks to Brian and his team.
  • Great venue with interesting heritage. Spacious and well equipped. Pleasant staff and waiter service. Have only had the light lunches and have found them to be adequate and of high quality.
  • Beef a bit over-cooked and lamb was too raw! Main dishes are a bit disappointing. Beef soup is free and nice. Dessert is great, and environment is good with view of story bridge.
