Mammoth Cave, Boranup

4.5
#3 of 36 in Parks in Margaret River Region
Step into a prehistoric world inside of Mammoth Cave. The main chamber is 500 m (1,640 ft) long and lies 30 m (98 ft) below the ground. On your self-guided tour, you'll see fossils of prehistoric animals discovered in the cave. The staff here provide an MP3 player and headphones to deliver information as you explore the ambient-lit caverns. The main chamber is wheelchair-accessible, but the other chambers contain stairs. The long path from the end of the caves back to the reception area passes through a swampy area, so bring insect repellent if you visit in summer. • We liked the fact that we could do a self-guided tour - perhaps that was because we had already seen the Jewel Cave and knew enough about the the cave formations. Unlike the Jewel Cave we could see ho...  more »
  • Took our little bub in into the cave - the entry is flat but there's a heap of stairs to get into the back of the cave. We had no dramas carrying our little one in at all. Truly awesome spectacle!  more »

  • I rated this as a “3 Star” because, as a wheelchair user, I could only access the boardwalk to the cave and the 1st chamber. I believe that the cave is fairly extensive but it has to be accessed by stairs and further boardwalks, which rules out most people with accessibility issues. Accessible parking is easy and is immediately adjacent to wheelchair accessible toilets. A boardwalk takes you down a gentle slope to the ticket office/gift shop and on to the cave entrance, about 60m away. The native flora by the boardwalk is abundant and typical of these southwestern forests. The entry chamber to the cave is impressive but my photos should display this. Hidden among the trees are recreations of some long-extinct mega-fauna, which is a nice touch.
  • A very relaxed cave tour but still amazing to experience. Lots of steps but very easy to navigate and take your time as the tour is by mp3 player so you can stop at certain points as long as you like. Great for children as you are not required to stay with a group as such, and pricing is reasonable.
  • Great cave , nice staff, self guided tour so you can stop and start at your own pace, so much to take in, then at the end you climb up 160 steps onto caves road , does have a gate so kids can't run off, if you do not like the sound of so many steps in one go then when you get to the end just turn around and go back the way you entered, once you cross caves road you have the choice to walk 200 m back to the main reception area or do the 700 m bush walk, we did the 700 and loved it, it is not too long, no steep hills, worth it, all in all a good experience.
  • This cave is not your typical marvelous cave, but it sure is one of the few self guided tours out there in Australia. You go your own pace with little people around, it's very quiet since each person has their own headset and it's very informative. Take your time here to enjoy it better!
  • Very different to Lake Cave but just as good. The audio tour was fantastic and good to move area the area in stages.
