The largest regional art gallery in Australia, heritage-listed Art Gallery of Ballarat was established in 1884. The gallery houses major collections covering the history of Australian art from the early colonial period to the present day. The building, the oldest purpose-built gallery in Australia, was designed in the Renaissance Revival architectural style, and had its foundation stone laid in 1887 to commemorate Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee.     Wonderful art gallery, excellent exhibitions. Very easy access with parking. Easy for elderly people to get around even with a walker. Numerous couches to relax on. Also has a great coffee shop.  more »

    like the Tardis....its bigger on the inside. It doesnt look that big from the street, but oh my, its huge. Two floors of art and galleries that run on forever..... free entry and the best way to spend...  more »

  • Great place to see the transition of art from early 1800s to today. The historic building adds to the overall charm of the place and a lively cafe to refresh yourself at. There are also daily tours to learn about the various paintings and travel through time with a guide
  • A great collection with a wide variety of works. The coffee shop has excellent coffee
  • Wonderful gallery with a mix of old and new art. Can tend towards the traditional but draws some fantastic travelling exhibitions including the Archibald finalists.
  • Great selection of artwork, the gift shop is damn expensive though.
