Australian Alps

4.3
History Museums · Government Buildings · Art Museums
Boasting the highest peaks and the only skiing areas on mainland Australia, Australian Alps remain popular with travelers pursuing snow sports. On a continent that's mostly dry and flat, this remote mountainous region serves as the only destination where you can enjoy the picturesque scenery of snow-capped crests, glacial lakes, alpine meadows, and snow-clad gum woodlands. In addition to great recreation areas, the region is home to gold rush towns, such as Bright, steeped in Australia's pioneering history. Overlooking Lake Jindabyne, the town of Jindabyne serves as a good base for exploring Kosciuszko National Park, one of 16 national parks and reserves in the area. Action-oriented vacationers can engage in all kinds of sports there, while the rest can take a gourmet drive along the Great Alpine Road, enjoying panoramic mountain views. When using our Australia itinerary planning app, you're building your holiday based on your own interests, visitor reviews, and the informed opinions of our well-traveled writers.

Message from Tourism Australia

The Australian Alps are filled with outdoor pursuits, character-filled country pubs and snow-covered gum trees. The mountain range spans the states of New South Wales, the Australian Capital Territory and Victoria and embraces 16 national parks and reserves. In summer (December to February) climb to the top of Australia’s highest peak, Mount Kosciuszko, or hit the slopes during winter (June to August) at one of the many ski resorts dotted across its peaks. Ride a mountain bike along contour-hugging trails, bushwalk to a heritage hut or horse ride along alpine tracks.
