#280 of 572 in Wildlife in Queensland
Located inside the heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef Marine Park, SS Yongala Dive Site is the wreckage of a ship sunk by a cyclone in 1911. This popular diving location is noted for an extensive array of marine life, which includes eagle rays, turtles, giant gropers, barracuda, and sea snakes. This is one of the largest and most intact historic shipwreck sites in the world, with a length of over 110 meters (361 ft). Explore the vibrant underwater world of a wreck that lay undiscovered for more than 50 years, and see its famous coral-encrusted structure. History buffs interested in the detailed story of the ship’s dramatic sinking can also visit the city’s maritime museum.
