A significant site for Aboriginal Australians, Mount Gillen rewards adventurous climbers with 360-degree views of the Alice Springs Desert Park. The mountain provides the city with a prominent backdrop, easily seen and photographed from many different vantage points. Make a short stop at the foot of the mountain, where you can visit John Flynn’s Grave, a memorial to a local minister whose tireless work eventually resulted in the establishment of the famous Royal Flying Doctor Service. From there you can follow several unmarked trails to the summit, where a ridge provides a convenient lookout spot. Bring plenty of drinking water and sunscreen, and wear comfortable shoes suitable for uneven terrain.
