#11 of 16 in Museums in Adelaide
Established 1856 as the SA Society of Arts, the society was first situated on the first floor in the Institute Building on North Terrace in the Institute Building in rooms now occupied by the State Library administration. The society was initially involved in the formation of the SA School of Art, which was located in its rooms, and the Art Gallery of SA. Bespoke rooms were built for the society for its 50th jubilee in 1905-07. Since then it has managed its own gallery, library and office in that space. The Royal charter was granted in 1935, for the state's centenary.

Gallery Hours during exhibitions are:

Monday to Friday 10:30am - 4:30pm; Saturday and Sunday 1:00pm - 4:00pm. Closed on public holidays.

  • First trip to the gallery, needed a map to get around as otherwise can be confusing. The French scripture Robin is on at the moment.  more »

Where to stay in Adelaide

Most budget-friendly rooms in Adelaide cluster in the central business district, with plenty of backpacker accommodations located near the city's central bus station. Adelaide also boasts an outstanding public transport system, which makes staying outside the central areas a viable and economical option for sightseers. Look for quiet and affordable rooms in North Adelaide, a leafy neighborhood filled with an eclectic mix of shopping and dining options. Book early for visits during peak season, and expect higher prices on the weekends and during school holidays.
