Adelaide Zoo, Adelaide

4.2
#1 of 236 in Outdoors in South Australia
Gaze at over 1,800 animals covering more than 300 species at Adelaide Zoo. Australia's second oldest zoo and the only major city zoo running as a nonprofit offers exhibits of wildlife from four continents. At Immersion, walk through Southeast Asian jungle and come practically face-to-face with Sumatran Tigers and Orangutans. A behind-the-scenes tour brings you up close with a range of animals and into normally off-limits areas. Pay special attention to the former Elephant House and the entrance on Frome Road; both of these are on the National Trust of South Australia's architectural heritage list. • Staff was really dedicated and efficient, they helped making the whole experience truly enjoyable. All the exhibits are impeccably maintained and I liked seeing employees of all ages, everyone was absolutely wonderful, especially the lovely lady at the information counter. I would suggest someone controlling the number of visitors going in the petting zoo area, I thought there were too many people at the time today and the animals could get distressed. We were a group of five, two mums and three kids including one toddler and we all had a fantastic day, very easy and accessible, highly recommended for families.
  • Pick a day with good weather and your guaranteed a fantastic family outing at Adelaide zoo. All the enclosures are beautiful so it's evident the animals are well looked after! Plenty of activities and possible animal interactions are available for people of any age. Good facilities with numerous cafes/kiosks, toilets, undercover areas, seating and a shop to grab a souvenir. Can be a little expensive so a zoo membership is definitely excellent value (only takes two or three visits in a year to recover costs!).
  • Visited the Adelaide Zoo mid week which was a good choice as even though it was school holidays it wasn't to busy. Spent alot of time visiting the different shows that were put on by the park. It was very informative and by my choice the lions and orangutan were the best one's. We easily spent a day there to see it all and even though it is compact there is slot to see. A must visit while in town and they have the only Pandas in the southern hemisphere.
  • Staff were very helpful. My daughter and I fed the giraffes was excellent- I suggest prior booking as we luckily got a spot and everything else was already sold out by 10am. Cafe was pricey which is to be expected but had a bbq running which was a cheaper alternative, plenty of shade was available which was nice. The biggest downfall was the amount of empty enclosures and not all of them being signed that the particular enclosure was closed. But overall for my daughters first zoo trip it was still a good day out.
  • This is an amazing place to spend the whole day. Perfect to bring children of all ages. Not only has a large variety of animals, but also has a large playground for children, lots grassed areas as well as inside & outside dining. Well worth a visit.

Where to stay in Adelaide

Most budget-friendly rooms in Adelaide cluster in the central business district, with plenty of backpacker accommodations located near the city's central bus station. Adelaide also boasts an outstanding public transport system, which makes staying outside the central areas a viable and economical option for sightseers. Look for quiet and affordable rooms in North Adelaide, a leafy neighborhood filled with an eclectic mix of shopping and dining options. Book early for visits during peak season, and expect higher prices on the weekends and during school holidays.
