#1 of 6 in Zoos & Aquariums in South Australia
Zoo / Aquarium Nature / Park
Gaze at over 1,800 animals covering more than 300 species at Adelaide Zoo. Australia's second oldest zoo and the only major city zoo running as a nonprofit offers exhibits of wildlife from four continents. At Immersion, walk through Southeast Asian jungle and come practically face-to-face with Sumatran Tigers and Orangutans. A behind-the-scenes tour brings you up close with a range of animals and into normally off-limits areas. Pay special attention to the former Elephant House and the entrance on Frome Road; both of these are on the National Trust of South Australia's architectural heritage list. Where to stay in Adelaide

Most budget-friendly rooms in Adelaide cluster in the central business district, with plenty of backpacker accommodations located near the city's central bus station. Adelaide also boasts an outstanding public transport system, which makes staying outside the central areas a viable and economical option for sightseers. Look for quiet and affordable rooms in North Adelaide, a leafy neighborhood filled with an eclectic mix of shopping and dining options. Book early for visits during peak season, and expect higher prices on the weekends and during school holidays.

  • With plenty of enclosures and shows throughout the day, there's plenty to do at Adelaide Zoo (AZ). The panda and primate exhibits were quite active during our visit which made it pleasant to watch and spend some time watching. Other interesting activities included the bird show where a keeper presented the crowd with one of the zoo's trained Aves. Amusing facts and history of each animal can be found on each enclosure. If you're looking for food within the zoo, be prepared to fork out a bit to keep yourself satisfied. There are a few options for dining including a deli/cafe and one/two restaurant(s) (forgotten the options). The deli/cafe serves pies/pasties, sandwiches amongst other quick food options along with drinks. Wisteria Restaurant (next to the entrance) serves sit-down meals ranging from $20-30 (from memory). Barista coffee is available here. Definitely bring packed food if you are not ready to spend more than the entry fee for a day out in AZ. A perfect couple of hours enjoyed within the confines of AZ. The only gripe I would have is the price of tickets. I completely understand the cost though. (Not really) New enclosure with the pandas coming in 2009. Great day out for a family, couple, or group of friends. A nice place to visit from time to time.
  • Realistically priced. Well laid out. Plenty of seating areas and shaded areas. Good variety of animals with room
  • Allow plenty of time. A lot too see. Feeding times are often very busy and the best advantage points aren't always clear. Ask the keepers to avoid missing that great photo opportunity. Zoo frequently has offers on, which can save you a few dollars if the timing suits.
  • Good place to go and explore and there are animals from all over the world. Handy to Botanic Gardens. Walking distance of Cbd.
  • Animals are living in family in a good conditions; however, there are a lot of babys. In addition, the staffs and volunteers are very nice and confident.
