Zoravor S. Astvatsatsin Church, Yerevan

4.8
Admire early modern Armenian stone masonry at Zoravor S. Astvatsatsin Church, the oldest sacred building in downtown Yerevan, hidden amid Soviet-style apartment towers in a small park with a plaza. Made of dark stones with two bell towers--one round and one octagonal, capped by a cone and pyramid--the church represents a masterpiece of Armenian architecture under the Safavids. Built in 1694 on the site of a ruined monastery, this exquisite three-nave basilica was erected thanks to donations by Khoja Panos Kalantar, one of the wealthiest merchants of Yerevan, who traded with the British out of Bombay. Explore its candle-burnt walls and enjoy the play of light coming through intricately carved stone arches. Burn a candle for the soul of your loved ones, a sacred tradition here. Put Zoravor S. • It is a 17th century church in the heart of Yerevan, surrounded by Soviet buildings. The curator of the church has started taking care of the gardens around since 2014 which has created a nice and peaceful spot for the worshipers and visitors. The women of Syrian Armenians' community also plays significant role to keep the church's life a lively and inclusive one.
  • Interesting that it is the oldest in Yerevan but other than that it didn't seem worth going out of the way to see.
  • This is the oldest church in Yerevan Armenia, very solemn and the mass is so quiet and holy, its an Apostolic Church,in the basement the tomb of Ananias was buried,Jesus Kristo called him Paul the healer ..
  • Lovely quite place in the center of Erevan even at night.
  • Awesome cute little church in an unassuming neighborhood where we got married 😊. Very beautiful inside and welcoming which I know is somewhat rare if you're not from Yerevan. I loved it and it was big enough to accommodate a small group of friends and family easily enough room to fit in about 70 people and close enough to English park for pictures after.

Where to stay in Yerevan

When it comes to accommodations in Yerevan, you'll find a number and a range befitting its status as the capital and most populous city in the country. Look in the Kentron (center) district, where by far the greatest number and best quality hotels can be found. Hotels in old Soviet blocks, grand former administrative buildings, or newly built high-rises offer standard to luxury rooms, along with a set of smaller hostels. With prices notoriously high for the region (and many visitors using Yerevan as a base from which to see the country), consider renting an apartment if staying for a longer period.
