Katoghike Church, Yerevan

4.0
Katoghike Church is allegedly the oldest church in the city, dating back to the 13th century--judged from the carvings on the chapel walls. In front of the church, see a collection of khachkars (cross-stones) and other fragments dating back several centuries. • I really loved this small church! It's too small but it has an amazing design. You can enter and light a candle if you like. The walls and ceiling is too old (900 years) but very well kept. The church...  more »
  • When you make this visit first thing call you attention is the contrast between the small medieval church and the Church of Santa Ana just to the side, which are built in the same color of stone makes almost fade that the temple is more ancient of the ci City. It was built in the 13th century in particular in year 1.264, as recorded in the inscriptions carved into its walls and over time it has stoically resisted very different disasters as invasions, earthquakes or the policy of secularism by the authorities Soviet during the Communist era, they wanted to destroy it but thanks to numerous protests and the voices of archaeologists was respected and did build some large blocks of apartments that were hiding this gem, inside which is a small collection of Khachars. When I visit this set in the Church of Santa Ana a wedding was taking place with which I learned a little bit about the rituals of this wedding ceremony. Next to this church that was consecrated April 30, 2015 is the building in which it resides in Yerevan the Catholicos.

  • Probably the smalles, but also the oldest surviving church in Yerevan. Since it is located not too far from the Opera House, it will be on one of your ways through the city. Stop by and take a look.  more »

Where to stay in Yerevan

When it comes to accommodations in Yerevan, you'll find a number and a range befitting its status as the capital and most populous city in the country. Look in the Kentron (center) district, where by far the greatest number and best quality hotels can be found. Hotels in old Soviet blocks, grand former administrative buildings, or newly built high-rises offer standard to luxury rooms, along with a set of smaller hostels. With prices notoriously high for the region (and many visitors using Yerevan as a base from which to see the country), consider renting an apartment if staying for a longer period.
