Erebuni Town-Fortress, Yerevan

4.1
Visit the ancient ruins of Erebuni Town-Fortress, the remains of a fortified city that dates back to 782 BCE. Founded by King Argishti I of the Urartu kingdom, the hilltop settlement most likely represents the origins of the current national capital. Take a guided tour of the fortress ruins to learn more about its history and influence on the region, or visit the adjacent museum to admire archaeological findings from the area, including pottery, weapons, jewelry, and ancient coins. Erebuni Town-Fortress is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our custom trip planner, Yerevan Edition.

It's a pity the restoration work has not been taken with more care. It's a vital historic place. The frescos can still be seen but the stone work needs better work. Also needs a clean up of the area.  more »

This is a small museum, but it is a good introduction to the history of Yerevan. It cannot be reached on foot from the city Venter and a taxi is probably the best way to get there. A below average sou...  more »

Very nice view over the city. We payed the entry fee but on the top we saw that there is a unguarded street where the locals come here for free even with cars. The street starts a few hundred meters right from the museum.

Fortress itself wasn't super interesting and unfortunately the museum was closed.

Having been founded in 722 B.C., Erebuni fortress is still impressive. It is one of the most important Urartian sites. It is a great place for the lovers of ancient castles. There are various cuneiform inscriptions. You can walk at Apadana, Khaldi tower and some other cute places.

Where to stay in Yerevan

When it comes to accommodations in Yerevan, you'll find a number and a range befitting its status as the capital and most populous city in the country. Look in the Kentron (center) district, where by far the greatest number and best quality hotels can be found. Hotels in old Soviet blocks, grand former administrative buildings, or newly built high-rises offer standard to luxury rooms, along with a set of smaller hostels. With prices notoriously high for the region (and many visitors using Yerevan as a base from which to see the country), consider renting an apartment if staying for a longer period.
