Arno Babajanyan Statue, Yerevan

4.8
See Arno Babajanyan Statue and judge for yourself if its whimsical expression deserved so much criticism from Armenia's conservative public. The statue represents a famed composer and songwriter playing a massive piano. When first revealed, the statue caused such public outcry that its creator David Bejanian was forced to modify it. He agreed to make some subtle alterations--shortening the composer's fingers and toning down his facial features--but kept the overall expression. The statue still provokes strong reactions, though the younger natives gladly take pictures with "the big-nosed man." • Like this statue and the big nose :) Arno Babajanian was an Armenian composer and pianist during the Soviet era. From Wiki: As a composer, Babajanian was active in most genres and even wrote many popular songs in collaboration with the leading poets such as Yevgeny Yevtushenko and Robert Rozhdestvensky among others. Much of Babajanian’s music is rooted in Armenian folk music and folklore. But generally, the way in which he uses Armenian folk music is in the virtuosic style of Rachmaninov and Khachaturian. His later works were influenced by Prokofiev and Bartók.

Where to stay in Yerevan

When it comes to accommodations in Yerevan, you'll find a number and a range befitting its status as the capital and most populous city in the country. Look in the Kentron (center) district, where by far the greatest number and best quality hotels can be found. Hotels in old Soviet blocks, grand former administrative buildings, or newly built high-rises offer standard to luxury rooms, along with a set of smaller hostels. With prices notoriously high for the region (and many visitors using Yerevan as a base from which to see the country), consider renting an apartment if staying for a longer period.
