4.8/5 based on 280+ reviews on the web
Admire an ancient fortification built on a steep cliff at Tatev Monastery, a 9th-century Armenian Apostolic complex. Erected on a basalt plateau carved into fort walls, the monastery overlooks a deep gorge of the Vorotan River. It once hosted an important medieval university, and was a center for the sciences, philosophy, and book illumination. Observe the fortified walls on a massive cliff, exquisitely carved entrance arches to the church, and its round bell tower covered by an evenly rayed cupola. The compound also includes an ancient olive oil mill with stone grinders and the tomb of Gregory of Tatev, the last Armenian saint, who died here in 1410. Take the funicular--the world's longest nonstop double-track cable car--to reach the village of Halidzor. • Beautiful cableway chic! Captures the spirit of the height and beauty around! The road from Yerevan takes about 4:00, it is better to go back to svetlu, and thus leave no later than 17.00. And maybe turn ziplining, we waited about 1.5 hours) but worth it!

  • Best Armenia monastery, placed in an amazing location. The "wings of tatev", which is the easiest way to get to the monastery, is the longest cable car of the world. The road is really bad. It's a long one day round trip from Yerevan, but the road is amazing as well.
  • An incredible sight to see. A monastery from the 9th century with a vast amount of history.
  • There're much more energetic and not so renovated monasteries in Armenia. Though view from Vista Point 1 km further up the road is fantastic. We came in Monday and cable was not working which was disappointing because we have to drive up by terrible road.
  • It is one of the most beautiful monastery's in Armenia. The tram ride, is absolutely breath taking.
  • My experience of this beautiful monastery is through others writings and pictures. I am blessed and grateful for their eyes, ears and insight!
