Tatev Monastery, Tatev

Admire an ancient fortification built on a steep cliff at Tatev Monastery, a 9th-century Armenian Apostolic complex. Erected on a basalt plateau carved into fort walls, the monastery overlooks a deep gorge of the Vorotan River. It once hosted an important medieval university, and was a center for the sciences, philosophy, and book illumination. Observe the fortified walls on a massive cliff, exquisitely carved entrance arches to the church, and its round bell tower covered by an evenly rayed cupola. The compound also includes an ancient olive oil mill with stone grinders and the tomb of Gregory of Tatev, the last Armenian saint, who died here in 1410. Take the funicular--the world's longest nonstop double-track cable car--to reach the village of Halidzor. • We loved the location of the monastry. Perched on the edge of a rock cliff. You can get wonderful photos from outside the monastry. then inside is interesting. Quite a lot to see.  more »
  • An outstanding very large monastery. Extra attraction monk chants played as in the main church of the band... very fitting... For lovers of sightseeing tours the onward journey over the H45 is advisable after direct arrival of Goris to Kapan and from there back to Goris or continuing to Meghri. 4 x 4 or high ground clearance for the first 30 km behind Tatev recommended. Just as NaviApp as z.B maps.me. The cableway is closed on Mondays!

  • This had fairly extensive grounds compared to others we've seen as it had once been one of the main monasteries. There are lots of empty abandoned structures and main cathedral itself is not greatly i...  more »

  • One can never understand the joy and happiness I experience every time I am here. Here you can feel the God, the nature and pureness.
  • Tatev Monastery is one of the best and fantastic places in Armenia. Located on the stone mountain is is surrounded by canion, making beautiful upper view.
  • The most famous historical site in Armenia, and of course on Sunday is quite crowded but not too much to be noisy and disturbing. The church is beautiful and I had the opportunity to see the funny celebration of the liturgy with priest typically dressed, choir of woman, incense and praying devotees. After many churches seen, I must say this is not the most beautiful, even if fascinating. I appreciate most the oil mill beside, well restructured and well described with the use of multimedia explanations, which helps to enjoy and understand much more than printed signs. I guess that this is the way to help tourists to enjoy every site for their particularities.
  • Must see ! One o the best sights of Armenia !!! Famous fortified monastery on the cliff. Best views from opposite hill
  • One of the wonders in Armenia. Great energy.
