Tatev Monastery, Tatev

#1 of 31 in Things to do in Syunik Province
Admire an ancient fortification built on a steep cliff at Tatev Monastery, a 9th-century Armenian Apostolic complex. Erected on a basalt plateau carved into fort walls, the monastery overlooks a deep gorge of the Vorotan River. It once hosted an important medieval university, and was a center for the sciences, philosophy, and book illumination. Observe the fortified walls on a massive cliff, exquisitely carved entrance arches to the church, and its round bell tower covered by an evenly rayed cupola. The compound also includes an ancient olive oil mill with stone grinders and the tomb of Gregory of Tatev, the last Armenian saint, who died here in 1410. Take the funicular--the world's longest nonstop double-track cable car--to reach the village of Halidzor. Travel in Tatev left a lasting impression. "flight" on the ropeway allows you to admire the magnificent and zapadajushhimi in the soul of the mountain scenery and transports you into a completely separate world of the ancient monastery. Unlike other ancient Armenian monasteries, this differs a greater degree of reconstruction (all funds from the cable cars go on the restoration of the monastery) and opportunities to visit different rooms, where the austere life of the monks. Great place with a special spiritual atmosphere. An unforgettable impression! A must see!

One of the most striking places in Armenia. On the beauty of emerging types of finish argue with Alpine pass (on the road of Martuni in the Yeghegnadzor). Wings of Tatev ropeway is that will not leave you indifferent. The monastery itself is under reconstruction. Be sure to talk with his father Michael (priest). Very kind and open people. Be sure to visit.

This ancient monastery is being meticulously renovated. So far the olive press is the only thing done. Once completed, it will be the nicest tourist attraction in all of Armenia.

The road is dusty. Best suited for off-road cars. However, the Tatev Monastry is wonderful... Make sure to meet Ter Michael and pray with him!
