Monastery Sevanavank, Sevan

(180+ reviews on the web)
Landmark
Enjoy a visit to the picturesque site of Monastery Sevanavank, an ancient religious complex that overlooks Lake Sevan. Situated on a peninsula that was once an island before the water level dropped, the monastery stands atop a hill, with scenic views of the lake and the often snow-capped slopes in the backdrop. You'll need to climb a number of stairs to reach the site, but you'll be rewarded with inspiring panoramic views. Explore the two historic churches, most likely dating from the 9th century and exhibiting a typical, simple Armenian style of architecture. • A visit which is worthwhile especially if you are lucky enough to get on mass schedule. The churches themselves do not have much ornament as it often happens in the churches of Armenia but best of the visit are the views of the Lake and the monumental complex itself. Just at the entrance of the complex there is an artist who makes works carved in stone that are in my opinion gorgeous. (no haggle prices by the way)

  • It's hard climb to the hill with stairs but the views are great! We were lucky and the day was clear and the place was not crowded. Got great photos ;)  more »
  • Like Khor Virap, this is a scenic location to be sure. The views of the Sevanavank monastery with the lake and mountains are beautiful. I rented a car so I could make my way out there. However you get...  more »

  • The view of Sevan Lake is breathtaking! When you visit Armenia, you MUST include this in your itinerary. Sevanavank (the monasteries in Sevanavank) is in higher location so you will have to climb up (don't worry they have stairs, a long one). Don't forget to bring your jacket, it's cold.
  • It's worth it to visit. Especially for the monastery and the view of Sevan. You can see how huge is Sevan and it's endless waters. Panoramic view of Sevan.
  • Perched onto a small hill, Sevanavan won the best setting with a panoramic view over Lake Sevan, which may be the most atmospheric and solemn cathedral in Armenia. However, it was so disappointed to walk along the lakeside beach as the sand was so coarse and most parts has been privatised and partitioned.
  • A great place! Situated on of the peninsulas, it has a great scenery over the lake. The church matches with the lake... It is dark, the way it was described in Muratsan's tale.
  • It's worthy to visit, nice view and good food there.
