Odzun Church, Odzun

#3 of 6 in Things to do in Alaverdi
Admire early Christian stone masonry and exquisite rock carvings at Odzun Church, an Armenian three-nave basilica perched on a hilltop surrounded by mountains near Alaverdi. Made from elaborately patterned felsites (fine grained volcanic rocks), this impressive eighth-century church protects the site of a single-nave basilica built by the world’s first Christian king. Legend has it that Thomas the Apostle buried Jesus’ swaddling clothes on this site before leaving for India. A barrel-vaulted roof and a characteristic octagonal bell tower stand out as masterpieces of Armenian architecture. Ask one of the local priests to tell you more about the church's history and the legends associated with it. • One of the stops of our day journey was Odzun. The very place where the monastery stands, very beautiful, light and soulful. On the territory of the monastery and old and young alike. Here talk about the news, interview with the Rector of the Church, children play football and other games. A wonderful unity of the people and the places. If you used in odzun, ask your guides or podgadajte themselves when local girls will dance folk dances, this is a very interesting and pleasant sight, gathering of tourists and local residents. Inside the monastery there is an amazing icon on the stone that you can ask about the unseen and this desire to necessarily come true, because this place is permeated with happiness and grace. That is exactly what you think when you communicate with the locals and get under their hospitable charm.

  • When I made a trip with my cousin’s family to Haghpat, we stopped by the church in Odzun. This building is quite interesting. Around the church building itself has been built another wall that certainly didn’t have a defense function. Additionally, there are two pillars framed in a small wall that were staying a bit away from the church. When we visited that place we were able to witness the annual blessing of the grapes, an interesting event that I didn’t know before. I certainly recommend that place.
  • Medieval monastery with pieces of very ancient parts
  • In Odzun village of Alaverdi region the famous Odzun church is situated. It was built in 6-7cc by catholicos Hovhan Odznetsi
  • One of the greatest churches in Armenia! One of the reasons that I adore this is that I was baptized here. The church is beautiful. It has an impressive colonnade, a memorial. The priest of this church is nice. His family is great! It is very easy to get to this village. You can also check Horomayri which is very close to the village of Odzun.
