4.5/5 based on 40 reviews on the web
Admire early Christian stone masonry and exquisite rock carvings at Odzun Church, an Armenian three-nave basilica perched on a hilltop surrounded by mountains near Alaverdi. Made from elaborately patterned felsites (fine grained volcanic rocks), this impressive eighth-century church protects the site of a single-nave basilica built by the world’s first Christian king. Legend has it that Thomas the Apostle buried Jesus’ swaddling clothes on this site before leaving for India. A barrel-vaulted roof and a characteristic octagonal bell tower stand out as masterpieces of Armenian architecture. Ask one of the local priests to tell you more about the church's history and the legends associated with it. • This basilica was built around the 5th-7th centuries and therefore is one of the oldest monasteries in Armenia. The scenic route to reach it. Recommend to visit this part of Armenia, the streets are sometimes disastrous (with animals that graze blissfully at the center of the roadway), feels like stepping back in time!
