Noratus Cemetery, Noratus

#3 of 8 in Things to do in Gegharkunik Province
Marvel at the age and design of the ancient tombstones at Noratus Cemetery, a historic early Middle Ages cemetery with the largest cluster of khachkars in the country. With over 800 steles with elaborately carved crosses, scenes of farm life, weddings, figures with professional insignia dating from the 9th to the 17th centuries, the cemetery is a majestic site set against a backdrop of snow-clad mountains in the distance. Today dotted with orange lichens, the tombstones, steles, and stones are all different one from another, testifying to the originality of their creators. Noratus Cemetery is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our world travel planner, Noratus Edition.

  • I had seen no pictures of the whole area in advance and was absolutely impressed. An area full of cross stones and also the tombs of recent comprehensive several hundred meters. The landscape contributes to the atmosphere, and eventually an ancient LADA emerges, whose Insassen come to look after the graves. A special place and that is why my opinion a must on any trip to Armenia. Time quite apart from the art-historical value of reaching back well up in the 1st century stones (the most 13-17.Jh.).

  • Noratus cemetery, has the largest collection of Khachkars (Carved Stone Crosses). The oldest khachkars dates to the 10th century. Take your time, walk around, see what were able to do. Amazing -- wish...  more »
  • Lovely cemetery of jachkars or crosses of stone, with certain characteristics, for example appear together stone rows that are familiar, when there are 2 stones together one higher that the other refers to a marriage, all stones are oriented towards the same point cardinal, and since the twelfth century began to give cornice.

  • Incredible medieval cemetery with hundreds of cross-stones, khachkars
  • Very interesting cemetery, and especially with a guide for historical context
  • A place full of khachkars, literally meaning "cross stones". It is the biggest khachkar-occupied territory in Armenia! They are very beautiful! Every one of them is unique. All of them are delicate, covered with cute ornaments. You can walk to Daputs monastery which is close to it. You must visit this place if you are travelling in Armenia!
  • Historical
  • Impressive number of khachkar. A loss of sight. Don't hesitate to go to the new cemetery where is located also pearls of tombstones. A tiny entry just to all beginning of the cemetery allows to not really being mugged by street vendors.
