Noratus Cemetery, Noratus

#1 of 8 in Historic Sites in Gegharkunik Province
Marvel at the age and design of the ancient tombstones at Noratus Cemetery, a historic early Middle Ages cemetery with the largest cluster of khachkars in the country. With over 800 steles with elaborately carved crosses, scenes of farm life, weddings, figures with professional insignia dating from the 9th to the 17th centuries, the cemetery is a majestic site set against a backdrop of snow-clad mountains in the distance. Today dotted with orange lichens, the tombstones, steles, and stones are all different one from another, testifying to the originality of their creators. Noratus Cemetery is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our world travel planner, Noratus Edition.

  • Place evokes the philosophical attitude to life. Ancient khachkars with amazing and different designs ... Though petrified statues of people.. Graze sheep immediately. .. A place of calm and grace. If you have enough time, wander the cemetery, it's interesting. This is a collection of historical records on stones, each story a flourish pattern. There is the most ancient stone cemetery, presumably from 16 century. It depicts a snake, fish and ancient ornaments. Very interesting. If there is an opportunity to take a guide, make sure you take. You will be taught a little reading patterns on the raise and your horizons become wider and understanding the significance of place will be better.

  • The cemetery is full of tombstones and vegetation. It’s a good place to walk around and admire the intricacy in the stone carvings.  more »
  • I had seen no pictures of the whole area in advance and was absolutely impressed. An area full of cross stones and also the tombs of recent comprehensive several hundred meters. The landscape contributes to the atmosphere, and eventually an ancient LADA emerges, whose Insassen come to look after the graves. A special place and that is why my opinion a must on any trip to Armenia. Time quite apart from the art-historical value of reaching back well up in the 1st century stones (the most 13-17.Jh.).
