Khor Virap, Lusarat

4.8
Experience a remarkable view of Mount Ararat near the fenced border with Turkey at Khor Virap. The monastery serves as a pilgrimage site where Armenia's patron saint--Gregory the Illuminator--was imprisoned for 14 years by King Tiridates II. Inside the enclosed compound, explore the elaborate altar in the Church of the Holy Mother of God, as well as a 60 m (200 ft) deep pit-prison built underneath St. Gevorg Chapel. Expect to climb many stairs to reach the monastery, and bring your walking shoes. • it was lucky to capture the monastery looking towards the snow mountain on a clear and crisp day. Our guide said it wasn't so just a couple days ago.  more »
  • Too steep stairs to see the cave where he was imprisoned Gregory the enlightened one before to make peace with the King and becoming the first Catholicos of Armenia. Many pilgrims visit this monastery overlooking on Mount Ararat which is today in the Kurdish-Turkish territory. Armenians face painfully on stopping their gaze on the barbed wire separating their border. In memory of Noah's Ark on Mount Ararat and landing their confidence that sent into the sky a dove during the flood, here at the base of the temple there are people posing a picture with the Dove who have in their hands, while others await doves imprisoned in cage

  • Very Spiritual place with great aura and energy, and nice view from there to Ararat!!!
  • Great view to the Ararat mountain is suggested to be early there for photography so you could have time to capture the beauty of mountain and church together
  • Nothing special about this monastery. Much better ones around Armenia. I didn't even take out my camera. It's close to yerevan and the view of Ararat is nice when not cloudy. Surrounding area very bland as well. Go to Tatev monastery or Noravank monastery instead.
  • Amazing view and history ... Must see.
  • Historical spot close to Yerevan which also offers a great view of Ararat mountain. Watch out for scammers placing a bird into your hands (!) as soon as you exit your vehicle and then demanding money when the bird inevitably flies off.
