Khor Virap, Lusarat

4.8
#3 of 117 in Historic Sites in Armenia
Experience a remarkable view of Mount Ararat near the fenced border with Turkey at Khor Virap. The monastery serves as a pilgrimage site where Armenia's patron saint--Gregory the Illuminator--was imprisoned for 14 years by King Tiridates II. Inside the enclosed compound, explore the elaborate altar in the Church of the Holy Mother of God, as well as a 60 m (200 ft) deep pit-prison built underneath St. Gevorg Chapel. Expect to climb many stairs to reach the monastery, and bring your walking shoes. With our custom trip planner, Lusarat attractions like Khor Virap can be center stage of your vacation plans, and you can find out about other attractions like it, unlike it, near it, and miles away.

Khor Virap monastery I visited was the first in Armenia. Khor Virap-deep pit. There really is a pit into which we descended, having experienced the indelible impressions. According to legend in the pit, about 6 meters deep, infested by various reptiles, and the air was so fetid that stay alive prisoners there was not a single opportunity. However, one person lived in Chorus about Virap 13 years, and this man was Saint Gregory the illuminator. His podkarmlivala one widow, which dreamed that its cross-up the prisoner. .. And saved the disease by Gregory King, who planted it in the hole. He was freed and cured him. So it was. Beautiful legend! And yet from this place see the border with Turkey and Mount Ararat. There was a familiarity with khachkars. Cool place. Go without hesitation!

Beautiful monastery in a majestic setting. Mount Ararat with its eternal snow in the background behind the Turkish border. However in August the haze of heat prevents to see distinctly.

It is a pleasure to visit sites with such cultural significance and history. It is even possible to visit the dungeon that imprisoned Gregory the Illuminator when visiting. Leaving candles to burn for loved ones and prayers is also a very reflective ritual that helps one to consider the ramifications of the things that happen in a single life, and how those events can impact the foreseeable future. Beautiful vistas of Ararat are also humbling and remind us of the great history of the Armenian people. The nearby plain is also fertile, yielding delicious fresh produce that can be acquired from farmers along the roadside.
