Khor Virap, Lusarat

4.8
Experience a remarkable view of Mount Ararat near the fenced border with Turkey at Khor Virap. The monastery serves as a pilgrimage site where Armenia's patron saint--Gregory the Illuminator--was imprisoned for 14 years by King Tiridates II. Inside the enclosed compound, explore the elaborate altar in the Church of the Holy Mother of God, as well as a 60 m (200 ft) deep pit-prison built underneath St. Gevorg Chapel. Expect to climb many stairs to reach the monastery, and bring your walking shoes. For Khor Virap and beyond, use our Lusarat trip itinerary maker app to get the most from your Lusarat vacation.

  • Ancient monastery with great views of Mount Ararat. Make sure to climb down in to the pit where St. Gregory the Illuminator was imprisoned.
  • This is coolest Monastery I visited in Armenia. Love the backdrop.
  • Wondrous place. Make sure to check in, especially try to visit when Ararat is clearly visible.
  • Christian Apostolic church were in deep 13 year live Illuminating Grigor lusavorich
  • It is a pleasure to visit sites with such cultural significance and history. It is even possible to visit the dungeon that imprisoned Gregory the Illuminator when visiting. Leaving candles to burn for loved ones and prayers is also a very reflective ritual that helps one to consider the ramifications of the things that happen in a single life, and how those events can impact the foreseeable future. Beautiful vistas of Ararat are also humbling and remind us of the great history of the Armenian people. The nearby plain is also fertile, yielding delicious fresh produce that can be acquired from farmers along the roadside.
