Khor Virap, Lusarat

4.8
Experience a remarkable view of Mount Ararat near the fenced border with Turkey at Khor Virap. The monastery serves as a pilgrimage site where Armenia's patron saint--Gregory the Illuminator--was imprisoned for 14 years by King Tiridates II. Inside the enclosed compound, explore the elaborate altar in the Church of the Holy Mother of God, as well as a 60 m (200 ft) deep pit-prison built underneath St. Gevorg Chapel. Expect to climb many stairs to reach the monastery, and bring your walking shoes. For Khor Virap and beyond, use our Lusarat trip itinerary maker app to get the most from your Lusarat vacation.

  • Khor Virap monastery-this was the first stop on the route of Areni-Khor Virap-Noravank. I was very impressed. Probably the most attractive in this place is chic look on Ararat. But in our day the weather was not very fully and we are not opened. Main-want to share one situation that occurred there. Perhaps no one else with this face, but as they say, forewarned is forearmed. We traveled by car with driver and guide (a private tour from a large enough tourist companies in Armenia). Shortly before the arrival of the tour guide said that local offer to let the pigeons for the money, you decide to take advantage of it or not. As soon as we get out of the car, we plastered on all sides began to shove the pigeons in all hands, and me and my wife and 5-year old child, very persistently. I asked how much it is worth, said 2000 per pair. I and my wife took on 2 Dove. Allowed. Give 10000 2000 return delivery. Ask why, meet the 2000 apiece. Require deposit of 6000, as was originally 2000 per couple, not give. Local suddenly crowd. The driver starts with them in Armenian. I still prefer 2000. Start swearing. I begin to fight back, saying 2000 altogether price in rubles. Guide stands aside, nothing says the driver something tries to locally agree. I'm on a low-key saying that either money, or I will arrange all the happy life, not on Facebook attacked (it's I have to guide appeal) and I returned all put the surrender. Just like that. Be careful. Regards, Anton.

  • This is one of few places where we could have a really good view of Mr. Ararat. It was still foggy as morning fog doesn't burn off for a while, but the large mountain was visible. The monastery has co...  more »

  • Breath-taking views on holy Mount Ararat and the militarised border to Turkey. The church is lovely, and do not forget to go down Saint Gregory's ladder (unless you are claustrophobic of course)
  • Historic church where the Armenian king was converted to Christianity. The church and monastery themselves are well worth the trip, and the view of Ararat is amazing
  • A very beautiful historical location with a rich Christian history; a must visit.
  • too spiritual with a huge history behind
