Khor Virap, Lusarat

4.8
Experience a remarkable view of Mount Ararat near the fenced border with Turkey at Khor Virap. The monastery serves as a pilgrimage site where Armenia's patron saint--Gregory the Illuminator--was imprisoned for 14 years by King Tiridates II. Inside the enclosed compound, explore the elaborate altar in the Church of the Holy Mother of God, as well as a 60 m (200 ft) deep pit-prison built underneath St. Gevorg Chapel. Expect to climb many stairs to reach the monastery, and bring your walking shoes. For Khor Virap and beyond, use our Lusarat trip itinerary maker app to get the most from your Lusarat vacation.

  • Amazing historical place for family trip. It's must attend place if you are in Armenia, the first christian country.  more »
  • It is a non-local station in Yerevan-Khor amazing vans ride. Running a 40 minutes to the COR will arrive in a non-Rabbi. If you have a non-waiting for the bus back in Kortrijk. Noah's Ark is that it looks better in this monastery, the mountain Ararat. Ararat mountain was originally named as the territory Armenia Armenia now Turkey land people, heartbreaking.

  • It is a monastic complex, with a church built on a rock, the interesting thing is your relationship with Gregory the illuminator (famous dad who introduced Catholicism in armenia, first Catholic country in the world environment to the year 300). Note that the town of gregorio slew the King of Armenian khosrau II, the story so that his descendant tiridates III pursued and killed this town except gregorio who was able to escape, was subsequently captured and detained at khor virap for 13 years in a cell) closed to the public) which is lowered vertically about 7 or 8 meters, subsequently tiridates III came you like a Lycanthropy disease, he began to leave hair all over the body, was 4 feet, etc. It was called to Gregory that healed the King with their faith and this established Catholicism in Armenian year 301. Comment that the descent to the cell is spectacular, and from this monastery you can see the Turkish border, with mount ararat where it was stranded Noah's Ark, this mountain though it is Turkish, Armenians consider it theirs.

  • It's an exciting place. We've visited the cave in which Gregor spend most of his years. It's nice piece of history and also great view. It's worth seeing.
  • You will get a good view of Mount Ararat, believed where Noah's Ark was resting. Gregory the Illuminator, patron saint and first official head of the Armenian Apostolic Church was imprisoned here by for 14 years by King Tiridates III of Armenia. You can get down through a small hole with vertical steps to see the prison 6 meter down.
  • A beautiful monastery, with ararat looking over it. A place where Armenia became the worlds first christian nation
  • I visited here along with Garni temple and Geghard monastery on a daytrip. This was the last of the 3 I visited and the one I knew least about but it turned out to be by far the best part of the 3. You get beautiful views of Mount Ararat in the distance while on inside you can climb down a long ladder down to a small room where the narrative goes the founder of Armenian church was held for over a decade in a pit full of snakes and vipers. The snakes are no longer there. Well worth the journey if you are able to do it.
  • Under the shadow of the magnificent mount Ararat, this monastery has a very interesting story about the founder of Armenian church. You can step down the stairs where he was supposed tone in jail for 13 years: wet, smelly and suffocating.
