Hayravank Monastery, Hayravank

4.8
#2 of 12 in Outdoors in Armenia
Checkered stone vaults and exquisite carvings define Hayravank Monastery, a small, compact stone monastery perched on a cliff overlooking Lake Sevan. Built in the 9th to 12th centuries on one of the largest high-altitude lakes in the world, the site features a church with quatrefoil cruciform made of red and gray tuff stone. It also showcases typical steles with carved crosses scattered in the cemetery around the church. After 250 steps to the top, you will be perched above the noisy Sevan beach with a stunning view. A Bronze Age archeological site sits behind the church. While here sample ishkan, a Sevan trout endemic to the lake. Temple on the way to Lake Sevan. Stands on a cliff and overlooks the Sevan with beautiful. The main entrance to the monastery is framed by a multitude of crosses that are already here are many hundreds of years put on the monastery walls. Around the monastery is a huge number of khachkars, tombstones and that are part of an ancient cemetery. The Church is built of roughly cut stone. In General, specially in this church go optional. On the road-site.

Where to stay in Hayravank

Most opt to make a day trip to Hayravank from the capital, Yerevan. A number of tour group excursions run this route daily, with the lakeside town around 80 minutes from the capital. Yerevan boasts by far the greatest range of accommodations in the country, with high-rise hotels grand and simple, and apartment rentals throughout. If you'd rather stay closer, following the lake counterclockwise from Hayravank yields a few more hotels, primarily located in Sevan, a pleasant lakeside town.
