4.9/5 based on 45+ reviews on the web
Checkered stone vaults and exquisite carvings define Hayravank Monastery, a small, compact stone monastery perched on a cliff overlooking Lake Sevan. Built in the 9th to 12th centuries on one of the largest high-altitude lakes in the world, the site features a church with quatrefoil cruciform made of red and gray tuff stone. It also showcases typical steles with carved crosses scattered in the cemetery around the church. After 250 steps to the top, you will be perched above the noisy Sevan beach with a stunning view. A Bronze Age archeological site sits behind the church. While here sample ishkan, a Sevan trout endemic to the lake. • We visited on a tour sponsored by the Envoy Hostel in Yerevan city. Quaint unlike the Sevanavank monastery on the shores of the Severn Lake as well as the tourists did the locals offer prayers, as less rather.
