Marvel at impressive basalt column formations carved by the Goght River at Garni Gorge, a picturesque ravine with an eponymous pre-Christian temple of Mithras perched atop its steep cliff. Thousands of hexagonal volcanic rock bars protrude from the clifftop like a giant curtain, forming what locals call the "Symphony of the Stones." You'll see some goatherd huts, an 11th-century bridge, and a few kiosks selling dry fruits. Located some 23 km (14.3 mi) east of Yerevan, the site is best visited by 4x4 on a dirt road, and offers scenic hiking opportunities. You can walk as long as you want! Unfortunately when we went it was a bit raining so we could not walk too long but there are some interesting hikes in this area that I would recommend to explore. more »
This is a hidden gem. For some unexplainable reason this place isn't so well-known. Do not miss it if you visit Garni temple nearby! more »
Yes, an area on Mars (the planet) was named after this gorge! After seeing the Garni temple, definitely go to the gorge. The natural hexagonal rock carving will surprise you by their beauty. The road ... more »
Lots of tourists go to Garni temple and miss no less gorgeous place - Symphony of the Stones in Garni. You have to be attentive to find this place. I recommend to wear long pants. Armenian snakes like Garni too :) I didn't meet them, just heard about ;) The place is very beautiful even people go there for wedding photos!!
Gorgeous place, don't miss if you visit Garni temple! it's quite near
Such a fantastic place! Getting here is fast. You can come here from the eastern part of the village. You can walk to the pagan temple taking the western road from here (this way you can avoid paying the entrance fee...just jokin'). The gorge has a medieval bridge, which used to be old, but after being renovated it looks very new and not interesting. Sometimes it is so frightening to walk under the cliffs because they can fall on you anytime and everywhere! But, anyway, it is an unforgettable experience to walk here!
