Garni Gorge, Garni

4.9
#4 of 25 in Nature in Armenia
Marvel at impressive basalt column formations carved by the Goght River at Garni Gorge, a picturesque ravine with an eponymous pre-Christian temple of Mithras perched atop its steep cliff. Thousands of hexagonal volcanic rock bars protrude from the clifftop like a giant curtain, forming what locals call the "Symphony of the Stones." You'll see some goatherd huts, an 11th-century bridge, and a few kiosks selling dry fruits. Located some 23 km (14.3 mi) east of Yerevan, the site is best visited by 4x4 on a dirt road, and offers scenic hiking opportunities. • From bellow you see the Garni Templo and the a must see Stone Great Wall that resembles an organ from some cathedral. This place was presented to us as " Simfonia de Pedras " / Stone Symphony.  more »
  • If there is time, necessarily descend in the Gorge. Garni Gorge is situated along the picturesque river Azat (its total length of 55 km. Azat in Armenian meaning Free) in the Koktajskoj field. The Gorge is famous for its unique hexagonal basalt pillars that have emerged as a result of volcanic lava. As a result, these geological processes arose stunning symmetrical natural monument, also known as "Symphony of stones" or "Basalt. Indeed, the rocks seem to be similar to a giant body. The columns themselves better not be powerfully close, because sometimes it happens here rockfall. What would descend into the Gorge, you need to go beyond the temple grounds, and immediately turn right onto cool coming down the road, which soon turns into a footpath, sometimes quite steep. But the climb back to the top takes about half an hour somewhere and turns out to be easier than it seems. Way down in the car killed, it is better to use local services. Near the Gorge is the famous monastery of geghard, protected UNESCO World Heritage site.

  • If you went to Geghard, Garni, advise necessarily descend in the Gorge near Garni. Near CASS standing in anticipation, dzhipiki ready for 5000 AMD on a very bad way to drive you down a Gorge, where the river and the mountain positioned rocks of volcanic origin. It's beautiful? Very much. If you're lucky, bargaining can negotiate over 3000 AMD-we thanks to guide agreed. I advise you to take a towel and take a dip in the river-we swam. The water is cold, but the memories! The descent of approximately 10 minutes, photo, bathing 15-20 minutes, lifting 10 minutes. Time and money will not be a pity

  • Lots of tourists go to Garni temple and miss no less gorgeous place - Symphony of the Stones in Garni. You have to be attentive to find this place. I recommend to wear long pants. Armenian snakes like Garni too :) I didn't meet them, just heard about ;) The place is very beautiful even people go there for wedding photos!!
  • Gorgeous place, don't miss if you visit Garni temple! it's quite near
  • Such a fantastic place! Getting here is fast. You can come here from the eastern part of the village. You can walk to the pagan temple taking the western road from here (this way you can avoid paying the entrance fee...just jokin'). The gorge has a medieval bridge, which used to be old, but after being renovated it looks very new and not interesting. Sometimes it is so frightening to walk under the cliffs because they can fall on you anytime and everywhere! But, anyway, it is an unforgettable experience to walk here!
