Haghartsin Monastery, Dilijan

#1 of 11 in Things to do in Dilijan
Admire exquisite stone carvings at Haghartsin Monastery, an architectural ensemble featuring three masterful stone churches surrounded by a thick forest. One of Armenia's most visited monasteries, this compact architectural complex built from the 10th to the 14th century includes St. Stepanos Church, St. Gregory Church, and Holy Mother of God Church, whose sixteen-faced dome has elaborately decorated arches. Ornamental highlights include a chandelier and icons, one of which depicts an Asiatic Virgin Mary and Jesus in an attempt to spare them from Mongol destruction. Visit the royal sepulcher and the vaulted refectory (built in 1248 and still in use) to round out your experience of the medieval complex. • Agarcín is an Armenian monastery located in the tavush region in 18 km from the town of Dilijan. Home Collegiate Church of S. Astvatsatsin (mother of God) was built in the year 1281. Often we don't go there. Recently, the monastery and the road to it was restored thanks to the Sheikh of Sharjah, Sultan III bin Muhammad Al-Qasimi. A very picturesque place where you can enjoy nature and ancient architecture, and then relax in the courtyard of the monastery.

  • Went Friday in the evening. There were almost no people. Sunny, warmth, noise of the river somewhere. The place is beautiful. There is a shop with souvenirs, to my mind, dear. Wanted to buy Pebble-souvenir from some inscription from the Bible in Armenian. Requested transfer to understand what it was about, but could not, because the inscription was written in ancient Armenian. Well and cost order 7 thousand AMD. So nothing from there not brought. All this meant that, for example, in Goshavanke trade near the monastery more adjusted and buy there magnet, tea anything easier and cheaper.

  • I was blessed to have seen this Monastery a day after the snow had fallen. What stood out for me was the fact that the Sheikh of Shariah funded this much needed restoration despite their cultural differences. Some might feel the to modern buildings is inappropriate but for me I could use my imagination of the former days but it was more about 2 culture's uniting.
  • Ancient monastery located near the town of Dilijan in the Tavush Province of Armenia.
  • One of the active churches witht a great natural forest with beautiful scenery.
  • A tranquil monastery in the hills that has been renovated not that long ago. The drive is beautiful with lots of great scenery along the way as well.
  • 10 miles drive from the town. I was hoping to see some old authentic stuff but the awkwardly done renovations make you feel you are in a newly built church/monastery complex. WC wasn't free!!
