Amberd Fortress, Byurakan

4.9
On a small mound over a confluence of two streams, Amberd Fortress stands as a witness to centuries of turbulent history. A major defensive point for Armenian rulers--standing 2,300 m (7,545 ft) above sea level--the fortress was built in Roman times and expanded on several occasions between 11th and 13th centuries. Archeological excavations discovered the site was previously occupied by a Stone Age settlement and a Bronze Age fortification. See the gates, thick walls, and imposing towers, and explore the remains of a church, chapel, and bathhouse--all of which support the theory that the edifice once served as a summer palace. • Come here worthwhile. Beautiful views along the way and in the place. Sitting here, at Church, and as a shepherd herding Otaru sheep or enjoy views of the Valley, you can lose your score! A very strong place-and an ancient fortress and Church on the background of nature. In my arrival here was a group of Chile (descendants of resettled be become a b) and sang religious songs. Time together with the Group I wasn't enough here, I meditate. I came here alone and used the time as desired.

  • Middle age fortress and church with pagan and christian decors, wonderful views.
  • Trully good place to visit for every human.
  • As a fortress-castle Amberd was more known during the Roman era as well as after the birth of Jesus Christ. It is believed that at the site an Urartian Fortress was built during the Bronze Age. On the whole, the construction of the fortress lasted several centuries. It’s surrounded and protected by the gorge on three sides and only the northern side remains unprotected. According to some sources, some of the parts of the castle were built in the seventh century. It used to serve as a summer residence for Armenian Kings and Princes.
  • Truly amazing experience, one may feel there as if in the Lord of the Rings story. Built on top of the valley, high in mountains, with a little inn aside. Be careful to take sun filter, as it is high already (2300 m) hence easy to catch a sunburns
