Amberd Fortress, Byurakan

4.8
On a small mound over a confluence of two streams, Amberd Fortress stands as a witness to centuries of turbulent history. A major defensive point for Armenian rulers--standing 2,300 m (7,545 ft) above sea level--the fortress was built in Roman times and expanded on several occasions between 11th and 13th centuries. Archeological excavations discovered the site was previously occupied by a Stone Age settlement and a Bronze Age fortification. See the gates, thick walls, and imposing towers, and explore the remains of a church, chapel, and bathhouse--all of which support the theory that the edifice once served as a summer palace. • To reach the fortress the bus rises to winding roads on Mount Aragats where shepherds take their cows and women gather apples similar to the Trentino. The mountain is quite barren and for this reason in winter becomes ski area. On top of the four dilapidated little walls represent the splendour of the Prince that the guide tells us. Beyond the stairs would lead to a path that leads us to a small church in front of Mount Ararat, where a priest in the Sun seems to be confessing a Californian tourist. When comes the large group of tourists the priest rushes to show us various souvenirs without ever giving us the rest, claiming to have no coins. Bathrooms surcharge

  • Although not much remains of this fortress you can imagine the grandeur. I liked it very much, for the location, the view, and even the road, long, to get there. You can also take a stroll down to Vahramashen Church, just below the ruins.

  • Covering several kilometers to arid and grey areas, hills and small gorges reach eventually on our purpose the Ampert Castle. Located in Byurakan area, at a height of 2300 meters above sea level. Originally built in the 7th century but what you see today date from the 12th century. The place in nature is indescribable dominating throughout the region. Down to its base are the remains of a chapel one can descend the stairs and to the public by close like to climb to the fortress.
