Noravank Monastery, Areni

Marvel at masterpieces of ancient Armenian stonemasonry at Noravank Monastery, an architectural ensemble set in the Amaghu River Gorge. Surrounded by dramatic red cliffs, this stone complex boasts the 14th-century double-decker Surb Astvatsatsin Church (Holy Mother of God), as well as Surb Karapet (St. John The Baptist), built in 1216-1227 while Latin crusaders held Constantinople. Both churches feature characteristic bell tower drums and conical roofs. Explore the complex further to discover a number of intriguing khachkars and important cave complexes. • We stopped along the way in Tatev. The monumental landscape, interesting architecture, Armenia is beautiful and original.

  • It is a site in Armenia, which is very venerated by the Armenian. The 2glise is two-tiered. The 2nd by a very narrow staircase.

  • Interesting and very old monastery, is located in the most beautiful location in the mountains. Our trip was on the route of Areni-Khor Virap-Noravank, Noravank was the highlight of our trip. Set small enough-so spend a little time in it (no more than an hour). One "but"-go far enough, while on the way you can admire the beauty of nature.

  • Its very far from the city..but it's worth when you're there. Fresh air, nice mountain rock, beautiful flowers, nice people..I'm a fan of old churches,i like quite place, even though we didn't watch the wedding ceremony that day, because there is.. because we need to visit other place.
  • The landscape and monastery suits each other perfectly. Just like a dream!
  • The place is breathtakingly beautiful, ancient complex of architecture, amazingly beautiful nature, cliffs, mountains and views. Also the road to it (from Yerevan) is quite fabulous. There’s also a nice restaurant nearby.
  • The most beautiful historical structure in Armenia. The drive to the monastery is equally as marvellous as the actual building. Quiet, serene and surrounded by jagged peaks, this is one of the finest historical buildings in the Caucasus region.
  • Getting here with public (Maršrutka) transport from Yerevan can be quite a struggle, however this is one of the most magic places I have seen on earth: I wish you found some ladies,as I did, singing religious hymns in the upper church since you will hear their celestial voices in the lower chapels too! Absolutely beautiful and peaceful highlight in Armenia!!
