Noravank Monastery, Areni

#1 of 17 in Things to do in Vayots Dzor Province
Marvel at masterpieces of ancient Armenian stonemasonry at Noravank Monastery, an architectural ensemble set in the Amaghu River Gorge. Surrounded by dramatic red cliffs, this stone complex boasts the 14th-century double-decker Surb Astvatsatsin Church (Holy Mother of God), as well as Surb Karapet (St. John The Baptist), built in 1216-1227 while Latin crusaders held Constantinople. Both churches feature characteristic bell tower drums and conical roofs. Explore the complex further to discover a number of intriguing khachkars and important cave complexes. After a climb in altitude through gorges, the monastery appears on a promontory. The mountain in the background gives a beautiful image of the monastery. Can be mounted on the floor of the Central Church using a staircase very little wide. This is a very nice site full of history and for the beautiful pictures. The nearby restaurant allows you to taste the Armenian specialities in a beautiful setting.

If passed by Armenia this monastery is just one of those things that you can't miss. A gem set in the mountains, a Unesco World Heritage site, which will convey all the austerity and the charm of a place that represents the cradle of Christianity. Admission is free and you can get to Noravank with a taxi from Yerevan. On site you will find vending machines selling drinks and coffee, instead don't make too reliant on souvenir because on arrival was closed and seemed to be for a long time. Enjoy the marvellous picture but you will surely find many tourists (it is one of the most visited places in Armenia). The entrance on the first floor of the main building of the monastery is a little tricky and especially the descent can be risky. Careful if you go with children and if you suffer from Vertigo. If this was uitle pinion please press IT at the bottom of the text, thanks. Diego

This relatively new monastery (built in the 1200's) is stunning and is set in a beautiful canyon. Well worth a visit if in the area.

The greatest creation of Momik in picturesque place. It's an unique monastery by its nature. Red canyon is so beautiful in sunny day. You can enjoy the beautiful view all day.
