  • The nepristupno high rocky cliff nepodaleko from Sanahin and Haghpat Akhtala fortress is from the monastery complex, built in the 10th century. In addition to the favourable natural conditions, the fortress still preserved also defended the high fortress walls with semicircular towers. Fortress fulfilled an important role in the protection of the north-eastern districts of Armenia. Some historians mention fortress called Ptgnaank (copper mine). The main entrance to the castle is on the north side and prodstavljaet a spacious dinning Gallery with a three storey tower. On the territory of the fortress survived the main church of the Monastery-St. Astvatsatsin Church, built at the beginning of the 13th century. This domed structure of type bazilichnogo. Prayer room, a longitudinally elongated pair of arcades is divided into three parts. At the Eastern wall of the central part (which is twice as wide as the side) is a deep apse with a low altar. In the lateral parts are two-storey side-altars. On the West side of the Church is privor as an open gallery. On the Eastern façade are paired niches, columns and richly ornamented bordered. On the walls are decorated with embossed crosses, ornate graceful ornaments. The inner walls of the Church, pylons, partitions are covered with high art murals, which are interesting technique, wealth and variety of colours with predominance of blue. Of particular interest are the frescoes on the theme of our Lady on the throne, Holy Communion, John the Baptist, images of Saints in all growth or belt, written in pylons and arches. If the top layer of frescoes, made after the 13th century.

  • The monastery itself is beautiful but it gets along with the scene. Though it's small inside the church, the interior is very beautiful. Outside the church, you'll see the magnificent surrounding.  more »
  • The church dates back to the C13th and is famous for retaining its original frescoes. Not to be missed.  more »

  • Must see!
  • Very good place
  • Very nice church. Impressive cliffside building ruins.
  • I am not really sure if this church is Armenian or Georgian. But for me, I do not care about its origins! Both of the nations have made beautiful places like this. The church is great! It is, indeed, one of the greatest churches in Lori region. The murals inside the church are fascinating! The wall that surrounds the church is impressive. If you are travelling to the northern parts of Lori or if you are going to Georgia, you must check this place! There are also some legends about the church. The priest is eager to tell you all about them.
  • Armenian attractive church, amazing place
