Akhtala Monastery, Akhtala

#1 of 11 in Things to do in Lori Province
Admire exquisite frescoes depicting scenes from life the of the Holy Mother of God at Akhtala Monastery, a 10th-century fortified Armenian monastery perched on a hilltop by the north bank of the Debed River. Currently inactive and partially ruined on the outside, the monastery complex features some intricate stone carvings and elaborately designed facades, with giant crosses decorating the walls of the well-preserved Holy Mother of God Church. The complex stands out as a true masterpiece of Armenian stonemasonry, with some of the best-preserved murals in the country. You can take a guided tour around the site in one of three languages. • Although severely attacked by invasions, earthquakes, weathering, upheavals of all kinds, the great Church of Akthala inside are spectacular, rare and moving frescoes in a State more or less well preserved. Some of them are distinguished by sharpness, colours and expressiveness of the faces. Among other things in this place the Armenian Christianity, orthodoxy, Byzantine art and Athonite teachings blend together to create an environment of great beauty. For travellers interested in Armenian history, religion and art (Georgian and, given by close proximity to the border) the visit of the monastery is a must. The fortified remains of other buildings on a grassy in a panoramic position in the Valley of Debed. The visit may be scheduled during the trip between Yerevan and Tbilisi.

  • Very good place
  • Very nice church. Impressive cliffside building ruins.
  • I am not really sure if this church is Armenian or Georgian. But for me, I do not care about its origins! Both of the nations have made beautiful places like this. The church is great! It is, indeed, one of the greatest churches in Lori region. The murals inside the church are fascinating! The wall that surrounds the church is impressive. If you are travelling to the northern parts of Lori or if you are going to Georgia, you must check this place! There are also some legends about the church. The priest is eager to tell you all about them.
  • Armenian attractive church, amazing place
  • very beautiful Georgian Orthodox church, not Armenian!
