#11 of 15 in Nature in Ushuaia
Explore Valley of Wolves, a park with a wide range of natural attractions. Hike or take a 4x4 tour through the diverse landscape of forests, rivers, hills, lagoons, and glaciers. Stop off at the main turquoise lagoon to see the native wildlife, including marine mammals such as otters and beavers. The husky breeding center located in the park introduces you to the lives of the animals, and the people who raise and care for them. Play with the pups and ask the staff about the history of dog-pulled transport on the island, before going for a test drive yourself. • Through the Valley of Wolves to start the trail to Emerald lagoon. We soon realized that there were many dogs that are used (this is the literal sense of the word) in the winter to pull sleds and take photos with visitors. The issue is that we went in the summer and we were startled with the thinness and the hunger that the poor dogs were passing. When we open a container of Granola bar, several dogs have surrounded us asking for food, such was their hunger. The impression I had is that they are only properly fed close to the winter season, when the site should be more sought after by tourists. Something needs to be done by people who live in Ushuaia. As we were a few days, don't we seek help for the poor animals. A shame!

Where to stay in Ushuaia

Despite its nickname, Ushuaia is certainly not the end of the world when it comes to finding comfortable lodgings--as long as you plan ahead and reserve your room in advance. Hotels and hostels are equally crowded here during the peak season (October to March), so it's advisable to arrive with a solid reservation in hand. If you choose to visit during the winter (June to mid-September), expect to find many establishments closed for the season.
