Isla Martillo, Ushuaia

4.8
#7 of 14 in Nature in Ushuaia
Catch a boat to Isla Martillo, a small island home to thousands of penguins where you can get close and observe them in their natural habitat. A guide takes you through authorised trails where you can get as close as 3 m (10 ft) to Gentoo and Magellanic penguins. Look out for other animals such as the penguin's main predator, the skua bird. Importantly, know that only one tour company allows you to land on the island to see the penguins, other tour companies can only offer you views from the boat. Use our Ushuaia online tour planner to add Isla Martillo and other attractions to your Ushuaia vacation plans.

  • The tour to Isla Martillo (or penguins ' Rookery, as it is known) is a must for anyone who goes to Ushuaia. We did the combo on the Beagle Canal + penguins ' Rookery and it was amazing! The Penguins are well accustomed to human presence, then one realizes that they are relaxed and are respected. If you go to Ushuaia and can take a tour, do this!

  • to visit Isla Martillo there are a few different ways. The main ones are: go by land or by sea. The ride to walk among penguins demand recently well early, because there are 20 seats by tour only. The most common means of the tour by sea is to take the Beagle Channel cruise of 4 hours. The farthest point is Martillo Island, but you can't go in the Islands. The catamaran reaches the beach, but we can only take pictures of the penguins from a distance and walk among them.

  • Among all animals, Penguin is the most popular animal among human because of its similarities to human walking and dancing movement. They choose Martillo Island their summer home. We watched 3 types of penguins: Magellanic - most common one; Gento - looks very similar to Empire penguin; and King penguin St - the most charismatic.
  • Very nice to have the opportunity to meet the penguins in your natural habitat, and view the tabs.
