Isla Martillo, Ushuaia

4.8
#8 of 15 in Nature in Ushuaia
Catch a boat to Isla Martillo, a small island home to thousands of penguins where you can get close and observe them in their natural habitat. A guide takes you through authorised trails where you can get as close as 3 m (10 ft) to Gentoo and Magellanic penguins. Look out for other animals such as the penguin's main predator, the skua bird. Importantly, know that only one tour company allows you to land on the island to see the penguins, other tour companies can only offer you views from the boat. Use our Ushuaia online tour planner to add Isla Martillo and other attractions to your Ushuaia vacation plans.

  • He was part of the package of $ Piratour in $140 hire per person in port shop, cheaper than the internet. Take a beautiful camera.

  • Mandatory summer ride in Ushuaia. The island is full of Magellanic penguins, but a lot. Walk through a trail where there are fences separating the penguins, but some of them spend this space and are very close to the people. There are several nests and many Cubs. You can't touch them although give away! We also saw a small group of penguins of another species.

  • Among all animals, Penguin is the most popular animal among human because of its similarities to human walking and dancing movement. They choose Martillo Island their summer home. We watched 3 types of penguins: Magellanic - most common one; Gento - looks very similar to Empire penguin; and King penguin St - the most charismatic.
  • Very nice to have the opportunity to meet the penguins in your natural habitat, and view the tabs.

Where to stay in Ushuaia

Despite its nickname, Ushuaia is certainly not the end of the world when it comes to finding comfortable lodgings--as long as you plan ahead and reserve your room in advance. Hotels and hostels are equally crowded here during the peak season (October to March), so it's advisable to arrive with a solid reservation in hand. If you choose to visit during the winter (June to mid-September), expect to find many establishments closed for the season.
