Isla Martillo, Ushuaia

4.6
#9 of 15 in Nature in Ushuaia
Catch a boat to Isla Martillo, a small island home to thousands of penguins where you can get close and observe them in their natural habitat. A guide takes you through authorised trails where you can get as close as 3 m (10 ft) to Gentoo and Magellanic penguins. Look out for other animals such as the penguin's main predator, the skua bird. Importantly, know that only one tour company allows you to land on the island to see the penguins, other tour companies can only offer you views from the boat. Walk next to penguins in your habitat is a dream. In my case, held in an unbeatable sunset Austral.

Had this dream and realized: exactly as beautiful as I thought! The place is very cold in the winter, warm clothing in addition to recommend.

We went in the morning to one of the most popular tours from Ushuaia, which is the penguins ' Rookery. There are two types of tours that go to the penguins ' Rookery: the boat ride that won't go down on the island Martillo, and land tour that descends on Martillo Island. The latter is more expensive, but worth it to see the penguins from your flip side. Is an amazing experience! The only company that has authorization for the ride is the terrestrial Piratour. Other companies can go to the island, but tourists do not come out of the boat. The Piratour has a reduced number of daily trips, and this makes it necessary to book in advance. We booked this trip through the Brazilian Agency in Ushuaia. . Duration: 6:00. Included: transport to and from the port of Ushuaia until the resort Haberton, navigation in boat semirrígido until the island Martillo and Martillo Island hike with a guide. . Is not included: 240 pesos in Haberton Resort. It is necessary to go to the port, which is close to the city centre and pay the fee at the Piratour kiosk. The suggestion is to go with 30 minutes in advance. . Tips: according to our guide, it rains almost every day on Martillo Island, where are the penguins. So be careful with waterproof jackets or coats, waterproof boots and protection for the camera (important). This is the only way you make it good. The day we went, was pretty sunny in Ushuaia. On the other hand, it rained a lot on the island. After we leave the port, the first stop was to see the known trees flag, which end up getting skewed due to the strong winds that blow in the Patagonian region. Then we went to the resort Harberton, which was founded in 1886 by Thomas Bridges and is located on the shores of the Beagle Channel. At the Office we visited the Acatushúnde Museum-Southern birds and mammals. There is a guide in the Museum that will tell you the most important items. There you can see bones of various marine animals, such as whales, penguins, sea lions and dolphins. At this time, the rain that started it got stronger. We went to the deck and ship all the boat that would take us to the island Martillo. This crossing lasted about 20 minutes. We arrived at our destination and, even in the rain, he didn't stop at any time, we began our roadmap. I almost could not shoot, because the rain was so intense that could damage the camera or cell phone. But even with the rain and without protection, we walked through 1:00 to see three penguin species. It is necessary to follow what the Guide passes, as not to leave the track and especially keeping away from the penguins. The first part is done on the beach and the other is an island walk through paths defined, to see the penguins and their nests. You see penguins up close, hiking, swimming. See the families and puppies. There are a few penguins who approach more. A Penguin was pecking on each person who walked by him. The tour, despite the rain, it was very interesting and unique. Surely must be in your script!

Where to stay in Ushuaia

Despite its nickname, Ushuaia is certainly not the end of the world when it comes to finding comfortable lodgings--as long as you plan ahead and reserve your room in advance. Hotels and hostels are equally crowded here during the peak season (October to March), so it's advisable to arrive with a solid reservation in hand. If you choose to visit during the winter (June to mid-September), expect to find many establishments closed for the season.
