Iglesia San Francisco de Paula, Uquia

#6 of 17 in Historic Sites in Province of Jujuy
Church Tourist Spot
Duck in for a quick visit to Iglesia San Francisco de Paula, a small, unassuming church located in a quiet village. Constructed from adobe in an American style, the church dates back to the 17th century. Head inside to see to the intricately-carved altar of wood and gold leaf. Once inside, pay special attention to the colonial-era paintings of the arcabuseros angels, brought from Cusco. Leave your camera at home, as the church does not allow photography. • The Church as the majority in Argentina's beautiful and it's stands out for having the Golden altar. You can't shoot, you can't take pictures, it is small ... worth a stop by if you're in Uquia to go to La Quebrada de la Señorita..

  • Uquia is a beautiful and beautiful village in the Gorge, the main attraction is the small chapel consecrated to the Santa Cruz and San Antonio de Paula, late 16th century Italian Franciscan (not to be confused with San Antonio de Padua). In it we can admire the Angeles Arcabuceros interesting collection of paintings by Cuzco artists, who together with the Casabindo, are unique in the country, next to the existing worldwide fifteen. These paintings represent Angels dresses with military clothes, although not all wear harquebuses, some carry drum and trumpet, there is also a standard bearer. All are dressed as 17TH-century Spanish military, (King Carlos II). They were originally twelve paintings and three disappeared. Once they were sent to Bs. As. After the exhibition, they were not preserved properly to suffer these very important deterioration, he was then a meticulous work of restoration that returned the original beauty. The retablo of the main altar is made with wood and gold leaf is very simple and beautiful. Cardon wood, was used in the ceiling when I visited it for the first time 40 years ago, banks were of wood, nowadays are traditional wood. The Church has a tower of the Chapel, although in old stories speak of two towers, disappearing one between 1912 and 1944. The current was repaired many times. This chapel was declared a national historic monument in 1941. The main door deserves to observe it carefully, mainly the lock, key, large and heavy and intergral hinge and incorporated the same inside. On the square in outside runs a small handicraft market where we can find various elements, mainly clay baked at derisory prices kitchen accessories.

  • Uquia this close to Humahuaca. The main attraction is very picturesque and well-preserved colonial church. It hosts inside the Angeles Arquebusiers. Another data... There is a fabulous hostel on its edge. And a craft fair where prices are more cheap than in any other side.

  • The Church of San Francisco de Paula was built in 1691 and also declared a national historical monument. American-style and with Jesuit influence, keeps the oldest altarpiece of region, Golden foil, wood and a treasure that is hard to beat: a series of paintings known as "Los ángeles arcabuceros", or "Nine Angels gentlemen", of Cuzco origin, that are there from mid-18th century. The angels are represented dresses such as the Spanish military wore at the time of Carlos II.
