Los Reyunos Dam, San Rafael

4.2
View the powerful Los Reyunos Dam and take part in outdoor activities along its reservoir. This embankment dam on the Diamante River was constructed entirely of stone and clay to keep costs down. At 136 m (440 ft) high, this Argentinian structure is a visible landmark along the river, and sits only 35 km (22 mi) from the city. Take in panoramas of this manmade wonder, which works to generate hydroelectricity. If you're looking for adventure, head to the nearby fishing club on the resevoir's western shore where you can hike, windsurf, canoe, and fish. A visit to Los Reyunos Dam represents just the start of the adventure when you use our San Rafael trip planner to plot your vacation.

It is a little expensive to get out of season. From San Rafael there is a microphone coming out of the terminal and leaves you at the Villa 25 de Mayo, hence the only way to arrive is by taxi and there is only a company that takes you. We wanted to collect 250 just by the ida and 150 return, since it is shared with others, at the end gained us 350 pesos for the full trip. The place is very cute, is worthwhile, but when it comes to lunch, it was all a problem. The parador Kaike was closed and only fishing Club had a drugstore that had absolutely nothing. Luckily the UTN restaurant located at the technology center of Regional development, it was open, but hopefully enough, since they had all the tables with reservation. There are beautiful views and it is worth visiting the entire area of the dam, but unfortunately we couldn't do the walk of navigation because that day was not open to the parador.

Where to stay in San Rafael

Many tourists choose to visit San Rafael on a day trip from Mendoza, a bigger city with more lodging options. For travelers wishing to explore the wine region from San Rafael itself, the town provides plenty of rooms in establishments that range from basic hostels to three- and four-star hotels. The least expensive lodgings cluster near the main bus station, an area popular with backpackers and other budget travelers.
