Inspirock Rating:
4.7/5 based on 440+ reviews on the web
Trek Refugio Frey along the Cerro Catedral, a picturesque mountain shaped by the weather into rocky towers and formations. Named after the hut at the top of the climb, the well-marked trail takes you along the weathered granite spires to the snow-capped peak overlooking a lake in the rock basin. Hike along small streams, forested areas, and finally through the snowy part of the trail that leads to the top. Enjoy the panoramic views along the way and have a refreshing drink at the hut (where you can even stay the night if you choose). The hike in takes 3-4 hours and gets more challenging in the uphill second half. • There is nothing more difficult to assess the difficulty of a path... for whom? in what weather conditions? at what time of the day? Definitely upload to Frey shelter by the route as part of the parking lot of Villa Cathedral involves an intense effort, but it is achievable for anyone with medium physical condition. We went with my son 14, without greater experience in hiking, a cool and sunny day in October. We left at 10 am and reach the refuge in 3 hours. We ate the sandwiches that we had (in the refuge also sold), we take something, rest, admire the landscape, and 40 minutes later, renewed, we started to descend on the same path. Two and a half hours later, we were again in Villa Catedral, tired, but satisfied. Along the way, we met people coming up with 10 children, dogs or even by bicycle, although I know if they came to the shelter or hit return before (the most demanding stretch after passing the refuge rocks, when it becomes more steep and there are some sections with snow, stones and mud). But the experience is unforgettable.

  • We went with my husband. We started the hike from the base of the Cerro Cathedral. The path is well signposted. The walking time is stipulated at 3.30 and 4 hs. But we did it at 4.30 (de ida), since I'm not at all trained. The road at times becomes difficult, but most of the time will afford the Gutierrez Lake which is beautiful. The view is beautiful and an unexplainable peace. Highly recommended.

  • Although it is a long path and the last part is hard, worth the effort when you arrive. It starts from the base of Cerro Catedral, or you can upload chairlift and then down the edge. The path at the beginning is easy, some 14 kilometers in total with a duration of 3 1/2 hours. approximately. After walk 7 kilometres walk begins to put difficult and steep. After passing stones and a kilometer of reach is more difficult still. When you reach the refuge alongside Lake Toncek, a place full of peace and nature can be observed. It's worth all the way.

  • You shouldn't expect too much from a refugio, but nonetheless, this is a fine building with incredible views and surroundings - The only real issues are that the capacity is too high for such a small building, and if you camp it's very very exposed to the elements and extremely dusty.
  • Absolutely worth the walk up here, outstanding views in winter and I'm sure in Summer it would be amazing for the climbing. Good food in the refugio too
  • The Refugio is just ok, but the trek is amazeballs! Do the filo walk.
  • Beautiful place! Excellent view. In winter the Lake is frozen. They can not stop going.
