Refugio Frey, San Carlos de Bariloche

4.7
#3 of 7 in Trails in San Carlos de Bariloche
Trek Refugio Frey along the Cerro Catedral, a picturesque mountain shaped by the weather into rocky towers and formations. Named after the hut at the top of the climb, the well-marked trail takes you along the weathered granite spires to the snow-capped peak overlooking a lake in the rock basin. Hike along small streams, forested areas, and finally through the snowy part of the trail that leads to the top. Enjoy the panoramic views along the way and have a refreshing drink at the hut (where you can even stay the night if you choose). The hike in takes 3-4 hours and gets more challenging in the uphill second half. Plan a San Carlos de Bariloche trip in moments using our itinerary builder.

Having made this trek in winter, with snow everywhere, gave him a special hint. Super challenging and fun, if going prepared with a good team (coat and tailoring footwear) can be in any physical condition. Super recommended! Avoid to start it after noon, because it may take 7 hours climb and do it at night is complicated.

Beautiful Trek along a well-marked path of medium-low demand. In our case went out from the base of Cerro Catedral, surrounding the Hill, towards the Lake Gutiérrez, then entering a beautiful forest where you can make a stop to rest at the shelter Petricek. continuing 1 km further you will reach the refugio Frey... With wonderful views of the mountains and the Lake. It took us nearly 3 hours. reach and the same again but it is worth doing so.

Well worth the 3-hr hike. Excellent mountain views, a small lagoon and stream. You can spend the night if you don't feel like walking back the same day.

Fantastic little Refugio is a gorgeous valley with plenty of tread climbing and rock scrambling. Advise anyone to do they Frey por el filo way up. One of the best bikes I've ever done. Good meal and decent pizza and very cool vibe.

Absolutely worth the walk up here, outstanding views in winter and I'm sure in Summer it would be amazing for the climbing. Good food in the refugio too
