Refugio Frey, San Carlos de Bariloche

4.7
#3 of 7 in Trails in San Carlos de Bariloche
Trek Refugio Frey along the Cerro Catedral, a picturesque mountain shaped by the weather into rocky towers and formations. Named after the hut at the top of the climb, the well-marked trail takes you along the weathered granite spires to the snow-capped peak overlooking a lake in the rock basin. Hike along small streams, forested areas, and finally through the snowy part of the trail that leads to the top. Enjoy the panoramic views along the way and have a refreshing drink at the hut (where you can even stay the night if you choose). The hike in takes 3-4 hours and gets more challenging in the uphill second half. Plan a San Carlos de Bariloche trip in moments using our itinerary builder.

  • Beautiful place and great location. I loved the experience of drinking wine with my girls friend in a cottage with such an amazing view out of the window. The only disadvantage are prices: we paid around 3.500$ARS (around 200$ USD) for two nights with simple main dish dinner and a bottle of wine (no breakfast included)! Still, it was worth it.
  • It says 4 hours to hike up but you could do it in 2/3 at a decent pace. You can camp and stay at the shelter. They have food and booze.
  • Love this place, nice hiking , awesome views, great loveable people.
  • Well worth the 3-hr hike. Excellent mountain views, a small lagoon and stream. You can spend the night if you don't feel like walking back the same day.
  • Fantastic little Refugio is a gorgeous valley with plenty of tread climbing and rock scrambling. Advise anyone to do they Frey por el filo way up. One of the best bikes I've ever done. Good meal and decent pizza and very cool vibe.

Where to stay in San Carlos de Bariloche

Despite an abundance of economical lodgings, most budget-friendly options in Bariloche get fully booked well before the start of peak season. Hotels charge the highest rates during popular ski months (July and August), when you're least likely to find a cozy room without a reservation. Mid-range hotels near the town center remain the best option for most tourists, offering car rental and tour arrangements along with the usual amenities like free Wi-Fi, cable TV, and laundry service.
