Refugio Frey, San Carlos de Bariloche

(4.7/5 based on 500+ reviews on the web)
Trek Refugio Frey along the Cerro Catedral, a picturesque mountain shaped by the weather into rocky towers and formations. Named after the hut at the top of the climb, the well-marked trail takes you along the weathered granite spires to the snow-capped peak overlooking a lake in the rock basin. Hike along small streams, forested areas, and finally through the snowy part of the trail that leads to the top. Enjoy the panoramic views along the way and have a refreshing drink at the hut (where you can even stay the night if you choose). The hike in takes 3-4 hours and gets more challenging in the uphill second half. • THE hard walk 4 hours, it starts from the base of Cerro Catedral. I did it with two friends, without a guide. The road is clearly marked, with small marks of colors on rocks, and trees. Up to the Cerro Catedral, you take my Bus to take it in the center of bariloche, in front of Manush, and leaves $23 or $28 I do not remember well. From the base of the Hill, you will be taking the same path you go through different landscapes, you surround yourself the Lake Gutiérrez, raisin bsoques, and last stage which is "death", is steep, climbing rocks. The first part is Valley, there are some ups and downs, but not much effort. The latest hike is the worst, but nothing serious. Those who have problems of hip, or lameness, I recommend not walking. The refuge is located next to the tonseck lagoon, is small refuge. Call before to confirm place to sleep. They have to carry a sleeping bag!. Night out $300, and you can eat, delicious pizzas! There was no beer when I went. Once at the shelter, you can follow the walk to laguna Schmol, beautiful lagoon, turquoise - Emerald 1.30 hours of ascent, by a wall of stones. You can also continue the hike to the refuge Jacob. I didn't do it. The descent to the base of cerro catedral, you takes three hours. This good tour! Beautiful landscapes, pure oxygen! Bring lightweight backpack, shoes with sole with grip, glasses, Cap, sunscreen, repellent according to time of year by horseflies, wrap, and much liquid!

  • We made the climb with family and friends, we walked for about five hours until you reach the refuge. Very picturesque place, had some "snacks" for those who were arriving. On the side of the refuge, a lagoon with pleasant temperature, where many are encouraged to take a bath. Round, stunning the "needles" of the Cathedral. We were around one hour resting and we started to descend. A 8/9 hours in total. Somewhat tiring for one day, but possible for a group diverse in ages. I recommend take or improvise canes. They are very useful for certain sections.

  • to make trekking high mountain 1 must be physically, those who do not go to sleep, as I must leave early from the base of the Cathedral to carry little weight and water, Poles, the trails are the most narrow, there are many bridges of wood and metal, tempered atmosphere.. .When are missing 2 hours poster, more adelanye there is a place for rest with tables and a chapel to the work , after that comes the last stretch, the last mile of rocks! I later making several stops 3 hours 1/2 return 2 h 1/2.

  • You shouldn't expect too much from a refugio, but nonetheless, this is a fine building with incredible views and surroundings - The only real issues are that the capacity is too high for such a small building, and if you camp it's very very exposed to the elements and extremely dusty.
  • Absolutely worth the walk up here, outstanding views in winter and I'm sure in Summer it would be amazing for the climbing. Good food in the refugio too
  • The Refugio is just ok, but the trek is amazeballs! Do the filo walk.
  • Beautiful place! Excellent view. In winter the Lake is frozen. They can not stop going.
