Refugio Frey, San Carlos de Bariloche

(500+ reviews on the web)
Hiking Trail Nature / Park
Trek Refugio Frey along the Cerro Catedral, a picturesque mountain shaped by the weather into rocky towers and formations. Named after the hut at the top of the climb, the well-marked trail takes you along the weathered granite spires to the snow-capped peak overlooking a lake in the rock basin. Hike along small streams, forested areas, and finally through the snowy part of the trail that leads to the top. Enjoy the panoramic views along the way and have a refreshing drink at the hut (where you can even stay the night if you choose). The hike in takes 3-4 hours and gets more challenging in the uphill second half. • Well worth the 3-hr hike. Excellent mountain views, a small lagoon and stream. You can spend the night if you don't feel like walking back the same day.
  • Fantastic little Refugio is a gorgeous valley with plenty of tread climbing and rock scrambling. Advise anyone to do they Frey por el filo way up. One of the best bikes I've ever done. Good meal and decent pizza and very cool vibe.
  • Absolutely worth the walk up here, outstanding views in winter and I'm sure in Summer it would be amazing for the climbing. Good food in the refugio too
  • Simple, comfortable and beautiful location requiring a good hike
  • You shouldn't expect too much from a refugio, but nonetheless, this is a fine building with incredible views and surroundings - The only real issues are that the capacity is too high for such a small building, and if you camp it's very very exposed to the elements and extremely dusty.
