Refugio Frey, San Carlos de Bariloche
(4.7/5 based on 440+ reviews on the web)
Trek Refugio Frey along the Cerro Catedral, a picturesque mountain shaped by the weather into rocky towers and formations. Named after the hut at the top of the climb, the well-marked trail takes you along the weathered granite spires to the snow-capped peak overlooking a lake in the rock basin. Hike along small streams, forested areas, and finally through the snowy part of the trail that leads to the top. Enjoy the panoramic views along the way and have a refreshing drink at the hut (where you can even stay the night if you choose). The hike in takes 3-4 hours and gets more challenging in the uphill second half. • It took us 4 hours to get to Refugio Frey in a normal pace and we stopped twice for snack and lunch. We went in October and there was snow at the top. We brought our own sleeping bag and food. To use ...  more »
  • Come to the place and the touring that's all. Mountain hut open a large part of the year unlike other shelters around Bariloche. The night is not given either although the present equipment, the refuge offers simple dishes and breakfast for those who do not want to bother to walk with groceries and cook then. Be determined even when arriving at the entrance of the trail leading to the shelter we had the bad surprise to see a poster "Full shelter with dates extending + a week" which found us quite surprising in light of the fact that it is not possible to reserve in advance. 1st come, 1st served. By forcing and arriving at the shelter in mid afternoon we finally understood that the staff in charge of the shelter had just wanted to make a quiet week with friends without having to accommodate hikers, the dormitory was completely free and is well spent the night but a little disappointed by this kind of behavior on the part of the staff in charge of the shelter... Remember: beautiful place, sunset on the refuge and the unforgettable mountains and beautiful hiking to go around.

  • Although it requires less from the physical is very nice refuge both when the adjacent Lagoon is frozen and people are encouraged to skate on ice; to do culipatín on the nearby hillside... surrounded by mountains of perennial snow, you can go and back in the day if you start early, or spend the night at the shelter reservation telephone prior to ensure a place.

  • You shouldn't expect too much from a refugio, but nonetheless, this is a fine building with incredible views and surroundings - The only real issues are that the capacity is too high for such a small building, and if you camp it's very very exposed to the elements and extremely dusty.
  • Absolutely worth the walk up here, outstanding views in winter and I'm sure in Summer it would be amazing for the climbing. Good food in the refugio too
  • The Refugio is just ok, but the trek is amazeballs! Do the filo walk.
  • Beautiful place! Excellent view. In winter the Lake is frozen. They can not stop going.
