Cavernas del Viejo Volcan Parque Cerro Leones, San Carlos de Bariloche

4.3
#9 of 12 in Nature in San Carlos de Bariloche
Explore Cavernas del Viejo Volcan Parque Cerro Leones, three caverns inside an old volcano. The caverns are at an altitude of about 900 m (3,000 ft) and are reachable by a steep walkway. Once supposedly inhabited by the Tehuelche civilization, two of the caves are relatively easily accessed on foot. The third requires crouching through a narrow path that leads to a lagoon with a pool of fresh water. Climb just 87 m (285 ft) more to get to the top of the volcano and enjoy panoramic views of the surroundings. • The guided visit is great, take you to visit several caverns and they explain how they formed, than animals and indigenous tribes inhabited them. You also see cave paintings and they tell you the history of the place. He guides 10 points, very nice place and very good organization of the ride. It is worth!

  • Lions Hill brings together a set of elements and aspects that make a visit to it a very pleasant experience. For which draws us visit places linked to the history, Patagonia and its early explorers this is one of them. The Perito Moreno visited these caverns in 1876, during those same days that planted the Argentina flag for the first time facing the Nahuel Huapi Lake, thus setting an important precedent for the subsequent defense of Argentine sovereignty over that area. In addition, the geology of this "Hill" is also very unique and interesting at the same time, an aspect in which it is not possible to expatiate here. To reach caves, especially at the beginning of the Trek (once we leave a combi to the foot of the Hill), and in the first two sections (with breaks) the trail was all uphill, not as demanding, but not suitable for elderly people with difficulties or for walking r. cave paintings are another element of interest, although they are very exhausted and their original forms can be quite difficult. The three caves that are visited are very nice, especially the first and the third. In the last great cavern feels an attractive adventure, having to go through a passage or extremely narrow tunnel (have to go crawling) to enter another cave that is a clear water lake. You must use helmet and the Guide carries a light source because the rear hidden cave darkness is total. We will not be spelunkers discover Caverns underground, but in practice and for a moment, it is the same. Obviously, claustrophobic to refrain from cross by the razor-thin hole or passage of five metres into the rock to get to the hidden cave. Ditto for many overweight people. In any case, these people can be expected in the large cave to return those who passed through the tunnel. Thus not lose the rest of the visit. As suggestions, the following occur to me: to) replace the (very necessary to pass to the hidden Cave) safety helmets whose systems settings are broken or that they do not work (that happened to my and the town fell me all the time to be crawling in the tunnel); b) placing each helmet a headlamp; (c) allow those members of the group who wish to, can climb to the top of the Hill after visiting the 3rd and last cavern and to see the entire landscape. (d) be free of charge and available to the group, in the 3rd. cavern, rigid plastic Kneepads (as those using the learn to skate), padded, fluffy on the inside, indispensable at the time of crawling through the tunnel for people who suffer from knee problems (as it is my case). Otherwise it is much suffering. Very good, excellent, the work of the Guide Sebastian, who was instructing us on all these aspects, answering all the questions of the group, giving us details and very interesting and complete information. In summary: nice tour, especially for family with not-so-small boys (type 5 or 6 years up, as children could get scared of the darkness of the caves). The ratio is correct. Is there a discount for pensioners in the base, the log house facilities, are very nice and clean, including a bar to quench your thirst or so companions wait comfortably when they can not make the tour, and finally, with very good and clean bathroom s.
