Cerro San Bernardo, Salta

4.4
#1 of 27 in Parks in Province of Salta
Mountain Nature / Park
Hike or take a cable car up to Cerro San Bernardo for sweeping views over town. Rising 285 m (935 ft) above the city, the hill once stood as an island in a prehistoric sea--as evidenced now by a huge number of fossils and geological layers under its surface. A funicular from the city's central square whisks you up to the summit, where the plain and surrounding hills form an expansive landscape. Alternatively, tackle the 1,000-plus steps to the top of the hill. Keep an eye out for city landmarks like churches and stadiums emerging below. Plan your visit to Cerro San Bernardo and a wealth of other attractions, well-known and undiscovered, using our Salta travel itinerary maker.

Where to stay in Salta

Salta's status as the tourist hub of northwestern Argentina means that a wide array of accommodations has sprung up throughout the city. The majority are concentrated around the city's grid-like center, surrounding Plaza 9 de Julio. For something more relaxed and closer to nature, go southeast and explore the area around Parque San Martin. You can opt for anything from a healthy range of budget accommodations, including hostels and small guesthouses, all the way to luxury hotels.

  • So during our lunch break at the theatre, three of us decided it would be nice to checkout the hill before we leave for Jujuy in the evening. Which meant that we ran up the hill (which takes about 45 ...  more »
  • This was a short walk up quite a few steps, but definitely worth doing because a. you get a good cardio workout, and b. it's free to walk up, so you save the 150 pesos that the cable car will cost you...  more »
  • You can get there walking (more than1000 steps), by car or by the cable car while you go seeing the city. At the top you can give a round to watch the incredible views and buy some good handcrafts, as...  more »

  • 2 point of view beautifull on the city but the rest of the "park" is not so interesting. A mini water fall, a garden, a " child garden", a basic coffee place and some artesanal local sales are available. Note that religious moments are also located on the area what explains why there is so much people on religious day. Adult Price for telepherique: 75 pesos for 1 way so 150 pesos in total (april 2017). You also can walking until the top for free
  • Splendid view of the city. Take the cable car to go up and walk down through the path.
  • Excellent view of the city. Nice gardens at the top
  • Great view of the whole city! Highly recommended but go in the late afternoon or on not so hot days.
  • Excellent little mountain to get your excercise on! A wonderful hike close to the central Salta with a beautiful view and a Gondola for those that dont want to hike up.
