Puerto Piramides, Puerto Piramides
(4.5/5 based on 550+ reviews on the web)
Visit Puerto Piramides for a range of ecotourism experiences in a protected coastal area, designated as a World Heritage Site for its ecological diversity. One of the premier whale-watching environments in the world, the bay was visited in 1972 by legendary oceanographer Jacques Cousteau, who studied the breeding patterns of right whales in the area. The whales, along with sea lions and Magellan penguins, can be spotted on a range of tours around the bay, on land and off. A small town of 500 people provides services for visitors to the reserve, with boat tours, snorkeling trips, and hikes around the coastal dunes starting and ending in the settlement. • We were late November in Puerto Pirámides, have rented us their own car and drove it to the island. Two nights we stayed in Puerto Pirámides. The whale-watching cruise have we ditch, because it was too expensive for us (good €70 P.p..) for that there was hardly any more whales. In the official tables, it looks like November's still season, but in the village itself it then honestly says that only a few animals can be seen. Now Crabeater, to see sea lions and penguins, you must roll around for hours over relatively boring roads - with maximum 50 60kmh, there not tarred. On the road, it is forbidden to stop 95%. So much for the "benefit" of own cars. Then get a vantage point and sees the animals in 50-100 m distance. The next animals are again 40km, or about 50 minutes further away. I think it's very good that the animals here obviously have their rest, but after I so much of the peninsula as a travel destination and "must see" heard - and then so much effort and cost (price in this area is abysmal) took me – I was pretty disappointed.

  • A small but cosy villa. Very nice beach, clean and to repair of the wind. Li do ambient! It has hotels, food and agencies to hire watching whales and wolves, onboard. Friendly and helpful people.

  • Although our visit was fleeting, puerto pirámides is a nice place to enjoy the beach in peace without people. Although the place is small, this is picturesque and variety of places to eat. From there you can whale watching trips and explore the peninsula to appreciate its nature.
