  • This is one of the more major excursions to make in La Rioja, which together with Talampaya attracts the attention of travelers, it begins in Villa Unión northward, the road has paved sections and other rubble but good passable with any type of vehicle. It is very important to hire a specialized guide, which can be the cooperative of Vichina or anyone else who knows the geography and the history of the place. We opted to make the journey of a full day with frames, a guide to first level and better person, transferring us in his 4 x 4 truck, the driver always gets lost somewhat the charms of the promenade, who as we advanced explained us the different landscapes depending on the height. The first stop was in the Gorge of the Troy, an incredibly beautiful place with the river meandering boxed between high walls of rock. The road leads to high Jaguel, the last town that you go through before entering the immensity of the Andes mountain range. Main street - which in summer becomes a real River by snowmelt water - there is a deep footprint between two ravines of Earth, on which the village sits. Already had traveled several hours and up to 1800m and was an opportunity to stock up with some empanadas rich lamb, caprese, cakes with grilled or fried, some ladies prepared to our eyes. It is also the time to deliver the list of travelers to the Ranger that controls the input and output and pay an a right pequeño($20.-c/u) of income. From there the road continues along Santo Domingo through gentle hills that seem to be covered with a velvet blue, green, violet, Brown and orange. Every now and then are small herds of guanacos and vicuñas that interrupt the stillness of the stones. After a while, in the middle of a wide Valley is the image of an oval lagoon, we were 4300masl under a sky incredibly blue, with majestic peaks around, and El Veladero, Bonete Chico, Pissis, the second highest in America, with six thousand eight hundred eighty-two meters above the sea level. The area has a very rigorous called arid climate Andean Puna, characteristic of heights greater than 4000masl, of Andean type. With a wide temperature range, prevailing low temperatures with strong winds from the West which almost prevented us to get off the truck, impossible otherwise to contemplate such wonder: the Laguna Brava, its name is due to that it is a mirror of water of 17 Km long by 4 Km wide and wind when it runs creaks like a brava We could see plenty of pink flamingos sitting on the salty waters, as migratory birds returning in spring when the thaw to nest. From here begins the descent taking another alternative path, we find a refuge for carriers which transported cattle on foot to Copiapo, Chile President Sarmiento ordered built in 1873 and which is still perfectly in foot-shaped circular type igloo and pyramidal roof with a door identical to an ovenbird, entirely built in stone with thick walls. We continue descending and again reaching Vichina found another rarity, the Diaguitas star of 10 m in diameter and nine points, made with red sandstone rocks, white quartz and black basalt, the six three-star are currently originating, two of them were rebuilt a few years ago. Its utility is unknown, it is believed they were used for religious rituals either were an agricultural calendar. This was the end of our trip, dazzled by what is seen and lived. Thank you very much mark!

  • Places no more desolate and wonderful in the world. From pink flamingos to the fuselage of an airplane in the middle of a Blue Lagoon lost among mountains of over 6000 m. Impressive!

  • We climbed up to Laguna Brava with Carlos, guide hired in Vinchina. Excellent guide, us was recounting the history and geography of the Road area is very walkable and absolutely beautiful. Laguna brava is the icing on the cake, with its pink flamingos! Tip: eat light and drink much water to not suffer altitude sickness
