Cerro Torre, Patagonia

4.9
#77 of 107 in Nature in Patagonia
Peaking at 3,133 m (10,280 ft), Cerro Torre offers you a chance to test your climbing abilities. Although not the only peak in Patagonia, this one comes as particularly demanding and difficult because of its shape and size. If you prefer to observe and save your leg strength for something else, do so from the glacial lake that faces the summit's eastern face. You can plan El Chalten trip in no time by asking Inspirock to help create your itinerary.

  • The hike to Mt. Fitz Roy and Laguna de los Tres is definitely the must-do hike from El Chalten, but this is a beautiful mountain and the hike is much more moderate. The mountain is in view (on a good ...  more »

  • An easy hike from El Chalten with amazing views the whole way.
  • Absolutely stop here if you're in town to see Fitz Roy. A huge glacier sits at the foot of this prominent tower mountain. Better yet, spend a few days backpacking through the many picturesque trails in this park. Even if you get rained on, it will be worth it.
  • Beautiful. Not as crowded as Fitz Roy!
  • Spectacular!
  • Just an amazing place!

Where to stay in El Chalten

Thanks to the city's small size, almost all of the accommodation options in El Chalten are within easy walking distance of anything of note in town. Most "hotels" are in fact cozy alpine-style lodges catering to international visitors, and tend to be on the pricier side due to their upscale amenities. Alternatively, you can stay in one of the many campsites outside town, though weather here can be harsh. During the high season in January and February, you'll need to book at least a month or two in advance as lodging fills up fast. Keep in mind that El Chalten depends heavily on seasonal tourism for its income, and many hotels and lodges, particularly smaller, family-run affairs, close down during the winter off-season. On the flip side, many of those that remain open offer lower winter rates.
