#6 of 15 in Things to do in Neuquen
The landmark indicating the centerpoint of the city, San Martin Monument features Argentinian hero general José de San Martín gallantly pointing his hand on his rearing horse. The monument was erected in 1954, stands 8 m (26 ft) tall, features a square water fountain surrounding the pedestal base, and at night is tastefully illuminated by neon lights. Due to the monument’s central location, often you will see the locals using it for a meeting point, demonstrations, and cultural events. • I live in the city of Cinco Saltos, and get to the monument to San Martín in Neuquén is to say that you could know much of this beautiful city, which is the capital of a province full of culture, activities and places to visit!

  • The Memorial is at the heart of the city. How it is located in the main avenue boulevard, there is a crowd of people, this monument is continuously bandalizado. Currently they covered it with a curtain of water to prevent ill-treatment of social predators (which increasingly are more, unfortunately).

  • Cute and emblematic place of the city. It has gone through different States because of use in demonstrations and struggles of various interests. You have done maintenance and remodeling. Although it looks beautiful with water fall, removed the steps that did meeting point for hundreds of young people from the city in times of leisure. It was opened on August 17, 1954, and built on the occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of the city of Neuquén. The monument is composed of made in bronze figure of the liberator and the base made of limestone blocks, worked handmade by a group of Italian stonemasons. Blocks of stones were brought from Zapala, and are placed in discontinuous form so they do not yield.

  • Monument to the José General de San Martín was inaugurated in September 1954, 55 years ago. To build it, had to move a few meters towards the North of the Avenida Argentina, in those moments was called Eva Perón Avenue, the pyramid Foundation, located where today is located the monument. See the Neuquén today, shows that everything is part of the daily life of its inhabitants, that which is seen and used, since a few years ago, just 40 or 50, which is a lot for a personal life, but just a moment for the life of the city or province. All those stories, that culture reflected in monuments, electric light, drinking water, paved streets, won over fences ground, rivers, everything that is shocking to this land takes marked traces of the past. Every thing, every phenomenon of the present has its own history.

Where to stay in Neuquen

Still relatively underdeveloped in terms of tourist-oriented infrastructure, Neuquen mostly offers lodgings suitable for business travelers and visitors staying a single night before moving on to Bariloche. Arguably the best choice for tourists on a budget, centrally located guesthouses provide decent rooms close to most major stores and restaurants. If you arrive without a reservation in hand, your best bet remain the city's hostels, catering to students and backpackers and offering private and shared rooms.
