Plaza Independencia, Mendoza

4.0
A bustling craft market and numerous street performances take place at Plaza Independencia, sitting smack dab in the heart of the city. Stop by the expansive plaza and stroll down its wide pathways lined with large, leafy trees, or kick back and watch the spouting fountains from a park bench. Grab a coffee and browse the many handicraft stalls that pop up in the area, selling traditional local souvenirs. Plenty of jazz musicians and a variety of other acts frequent the square, as well. For travelers who use our custom trip planner, Mendoza holidays become easier to arrange, with trips to the Plaza Independencia and other attractions mapped out and timetabled.

  • The square is very beautiful and Nice in the morning. Big, with lots of trees, it's worth a walk during the day. The night has a craft fair in the city with simple articles.

  • Is the central square of the city, occupies 4 blocks. It was founded in 1864 after a great earthquake that destroyed the city and is the symbol of reconstruction of Mendoza. The location is nice for a walk, has a beautiful Fountain, a fair, a Museum (free entry) and a theatre. It is surrounded by hotels and restaurants and the theatre Indepencia. At night you can see the coat of arms of the city all lit up with coloured lights.

  • As one of the few places open on New Years Day, it was relatively lively and worth a quick visit at night. Families, couples, children, & singles mutually enjoyed the plaza without problems. Great place you sit down, enjoy some gelato, & relax on a summer night.
  • This nice plaza has a lot to offer . Is good to walk around and relax. some times there are events goin on. Also the artisan vendors are set up on weekend , a lot to look at and to purchase if you like.
  • The heart of Mendoza. It is a great walk starting from Peatonal Sarmiento, one stop on Independence Square, them go ahead algo Sarmiento Street. Finally Ending on Cerro de la Gloria in Dan Martin Park. Great day!!!
  • I met an amazing girl here! She is currently holding on to my snowboard gear while I explore Patagonia. That said, it was a beautiful place, and I was lucky enough to there on a celebration weekend. Music in the plaza is awesome! Also, she was Santiagan... Good times and drinking on the street is chill!

Where to stay in Mendoza

As the center of Argentina's wine industry, Mendoza offers plenty of conventional hostel and hotel options, as well as a good selection of short-term apartments for rent. Visitors taking language courses or spending several weeks on the wine route usually snatch these early in the tourist season (which lasts from mid-December to late-February), so it's a good idea to do some research and contact the owners before you arrive. Keep in mind that some of the town's hostels only offer beds to guests signed up for their wine tours.
