Plaza Espana, Mendoza

4.0
#1 of 9 in Historic Sites in Mendoza
Historic Walking Area Garden
Framed by lush vegetation, Plaza Espana features tiled benches, a central space with a fountain, and a large monument in the back, which stands as a testament to the founding of the city. The most distinctive feature of the square are the mosaics made of painted tiles, which cover the benches, the fountain floor, flowerpots, and the base of the monument. The tiled friezes depict scenes from the discovery of America and the work of the missionaries. Two powerful female figures of travertine marble represent Spain and Argentina. High school kids often use the square as a skating ground. • Very nice, with its typical Spanish tiles, it is set in his unmistakable style. His imprint with images alluding to the conquest of america, denotes an excellent artistic work, which leads us to imagine how jurisdictions those first scenes when they set foot in American soil and his contact with the local population.

  • A square near the commercial centre of Mendoza. Very well located, is frequented by the young ward of the city, and sometimes was a little bit dangerous.

  • Beautiful square, lined and with enough apart to have tile in various locations as a means of decoration.

  • Nice park but looks run down and the graffiti is on some of the monument.
  • Wunderful place ! But as some other commented some people disrespected the place and tag it...
  • Linda nada expectacular
  • This is the second most beautiful square in town, after Plaza Independencia. It's ideal to read a book, to relax or simply to take pics.
  • Beatiful

Where to stay in Mendoza

As the center of Argentina's wine industry, Mendoza offers plenty of conventional hostel and hotel options, as well as a good selection of short-term apartments for rent. Visitors taking language courses or spending several weeks on the wine route usually snatch these early in the tourist season (which lasts from mid-December to late-February), so it's a good idea to do some research and contact the owners before you arrive. Keep in mind that some of the town's hostels only offer beds to guests signed up for their wine tours.
