An important landmark, Mar del Plata Cathedral pays tribute to the Roman Catholic faith in Argentina. Erected in 1905, the neo-gothic church is dedicated to St. Peter the Apostle and St. Cecilia. Outside, admire the tall clock tower, which houses five bells donated from a workshop in Annecy, France. Three reliefs adorn the main façade and depict scenes from Jesus’ life, including the encounter with the adulteress. As you approach the cathedral from a distance, you’ll be able to see the glazed Viennese tiles that cover the roof. Inside, appreciate the stained-glass windows, the impressive woodwork, as well as several altars dedicated to Jesus and various saints. • The Cathedral of Saints Peter and Cecilia in Mar del Plata has been declared "national heritage". It was inaugurated on February 12, 1905. The work, of neo-Gothic style, was directed by Mr. Pierre Benoit. On the main facade there are three high relief depicting scenes from the life of Jesus: "when he was apprehended in the Mount of olives", "Preaching in the boat", and "The encounter with the adulteress". All the external reliefs are works by the sculptors Hernán Cullen and Humberto Cerantonio. You can see the Viennese glazed tiles, with a splendid colorful. The plaster simulates large blocks of stone, known as stone Paris. The organ is located above the main door, it was inaugurated on January 20, 1906, built in factory Giacomo Locatelli in Bergamo, Italy. It is mechanical, three keyboards and pedals with bellows, electrically operated. The Altar was designed by the architect Pedro J. Benoit and performed in France. It has an altarpiece in wood, of Gothic style. It is beautiful to know and visit her when we passed by it.

  • Originally its name was San Pedro, in 1912 it was renamed Santa Cecilia and in 1924, parish now dedicated to two Saints, was named a minor Basilica. The Roman Catholic Diocese of Mar del Plata was created in 1957 and the Temple became the seat of the bishopric, with the current denomination (1905). The work is of Gothic style, has geometrical lines in its central tower where the cross is located, the side towers are symmetrical. Altar. The stained glass windows of the Cathedral are all from France and donated by prestigious families of Mar del Plata. The central chandelier was brought from the Bristol Hotel in the city. The floor is mosaic English and the ceiling is made of glazed tiles of different colours, all European. The organ is Italian and was built the same year of the Foundation of the Cathedral, with three manual keyboards with a total of 36 records and 2500 pipes. In the Altar are the relics, a piece of the cross of Christ, the remains of Saints Martyrs and the remains of Bishop Enrique Rau, first bishop of Mar del Plata. On the right, in the interior of the temple, is a replica of La Piedad. The carillon consists of five bronze bells which were cast in France, identified with the name of those who donated them: Clara, Ines, Ercilia, Ernestina and Josefina. It is the third largest province after the Cathedral of La Plata Cathedral and Basilica de Lujan is located in the center of the city, forming the typical civic, around Central magnificent from the square Center San Martín, on your left the municipal Palace and the teatro Colón, opposite the primary school No. 1, and on your right the commercial pedestrian , easily accessible by all visitors
