Reserva Provincial La Payunia, Malargue

4.8
#2 of 16 in Things to do in Malargue
Ride through a moon-like landscape when you tour Reserva Provincial La Payunia, a nature preserve dotted with volcanic cones. Take a tour of the reserve to see the barren land from dry deserts up to the volcanic craters. You'll drive over volcanic rock beds, including collapsed lava tubes, and see snow-capped mountains in the distance. Especially notable is the black terrain formed by volcanic ash, dubbed Pampas Negras. Part of the reserve lacks almost any vegetation, though you'll find some wildlife here, including guanacos, armadillos, chinchillas, and more. • A unique place is... volcanoes where you look at and landscapes that seem not of this planet. Totally recommended to go, as far as possible, December and January... and trying to do at night with full moon.

  • An unmissable excursion by the landscape and the energy that offers. There's that take all day, but it's worth the effort. Lacks a bit of infrastructure, but I understand that they are in that

  • It is an excursion that we recommend with guides and preferably with some tourism agencies. I recommend this since they have vehicles suitable for these roads. It is a tiring trip, many hours driving. I did the tour with Karen Santiago Travel. The place is a desert of inactive volcanoes around 400 volcanoes. According to the information in the Guide, it is the only region in the world that brings this amount of volcanoes. Of them, it has little scientific information. A few years ago scientists from several countries visited to take samples of 65 of them and having accurate data on their age, times that were active, etc. On the tour you'll see black roads, ash, volcanic rocks, and even is you can pull up walking to the edge of the crater of one of the volcanoes. Take shelter, since the wind is pretty and cool. The area that runs allows you to see a few but enough to know the place. It is also an area which is being exploited by YPF. The trip by agency has a cost of $1300 per person, includes breakfast, in which are thermos with coffee and half moons, and a lunch with sodas, water and sandwiches of ham and cheese.
