Laguna de los Tres, Los Glaciares National Park

4.9
#2 of 11 in Trails in Province of Santa Cruz
Hike to Laguna de los Tres, an emerald lagoon of glacier water on a track that reveals plenty of natural sights along the way. On your way up, you'll gain excellent views of the area's granite peaks, and perhaps even some condors flying overhead (bring your binoculars). The final stretch of the increasingly steep trail will also get you sights of the lagoon itself, with glaciers hanging from the slopes that surround it. • Without doubt one of the most beautiful places in the world. Be sure to go to LAGUNA SUCIA, which is exactly beside the Laguna de los Tres, but not everyone knows of your existence, it's beautiful. The trekking is exhausting just in the last kilometer (not recommended if the weather conditions are bad), the rest of the path is quiet, passing by beautiful Woods. The trail is very well outlined.

  • Pretty rando, a little climb at the beginning but not too stiff, relatively flat on the 3/4 following, with several viewpoints on the Fitz Roy, and a rise although steep at the end arrived at the top of the last climb, we have a point of view on a laguna (frozen in November 2018) and the Fitz Roy (when you have the chance). On the left we see a small hill below: go, this allows to see the 2nd laguna. to avoid making a roundtrip in touring, an option is from the hosteria el pilar, along the rio blanco, pass the glaciar piedra blanca, and Mount Fitz roy. Down the trail of cerro fitz roy, to the center of el chatlen. The Piedra blancas relaxation is truly magical. To go a the hosteria el pilar, several option: stop, taxi or bus from el chaltén. Point practice: the entrance to the North glacier national park is free (so that fee, to access the glacier perito moreno - finally in November 2018 in all cases)

  • The trail is very pretty and quiet until you start going steep climb. Reserve an extra breath to this end, it will be 1 hour climbing path from Earth and loose rocks. All the effort is worth it when you arrive and see that show on your face. I did 6 hours round-trip from the hosteria El Pilar and I was some 2 hours upstairs admiring (the Lake is still frozen at this time). Take the opportunity to go to the beautiful laguna Sucia, soon left, another marvel of Chaltén.

  • Absolutely stunning hike. Worth the long walk for sure!! However-- if you're not super fit/weak knees/over age 45 I would be very wary about doing it late in the season. We did it late April and the steep terrain covered in ice on the last Km of the hike was legitimately pretty dangerous even for young fit people.
  • For hiking it’s really cool. The view is really awesome and stunning.
  • Well worth the 10km hike! Absolutely beautiful. Most of the trail is easy going with a more steep and challenging last km.
  • We left at 7:30am and had a quiet trail all the way to the top with only a couple of other people there when we arrived. It was a little cloudy but we knew that was common. On the way down we encountered quite a number of people and groups on their way up, some of these groups were large so beware and prepare to wait your turn on some of the narrow parts. The path is very well maintained and marked. It took us 5.5hrs for the return trip from El Chaltern to the top and back.
  • Beautiful location. The last 1km part of the hike was tough. Watch out for the false summit! No need to carry water as you can drink the glacial run off but I wish I had brought walking poles for the downhill. Get there early and beat the crowds. If you arrive around noon, photos in the midday sun will mean shadows under your eyes and nose spoil your selfies! Don’t hike this alone at night. You will miss the views as you come in to the mountains. Also there are wild cats -pumas - in the area.
