Laguna de los Tres, Los Glaciares National Park

4.9
#2 of 10 in Trails in Province of Santa Cruz
Hike to Laguna de los Tres, an emerald lagoon of glacier water on a track that reveals plenty of natural sights along the way. On your way up, you'll gain excellent views of the area's granite peaks, and perhaps even some condors flying overhead (bring your binoculars). The final stretch of the increasingly steep trail will also get you sights of the lagoon itself, with glaciers hanging from the slopes that surround it. • The walk is about 6.60 MI and is not suitable for everyone: the last kilometers is difficult, because it is very steep and amid the rocks. Easy to slip and injure themselves. Once you reach the lagoon, if you are lucky with the weather, the view of Fitz Roy is unforgettable and nothing short of spectacular. If you do not immediately see the Cerro, bear with me: the weather changes very quickly. PS: bring warm clothes for relax at the lagoon, because the wind is very strong.

  • Recommend doing it from Pilar stay along the White River, passing through a forest dream and the Piedras Blancas galcier halfway through the journey. Reserve forces for the last section which is too steep. Trekking poles are essential to not run out on the way up and on the way down also.

  • A valuable tip is to take a taxi and go to the Hospedria El Pilar of about 15 kms from El Chaten. Start the trail to Laguna de Los 3 de la the good saved in the legs and in kilometers. On the way you'll pass by the Mirador Piedras, which is absolutely beautiful, White and the last kilometer to the Laguna is quite steep, but worth every effort, do get in that place so beautiful cause until the shivers. And back there are two more ways giving the option to visit other places.

  • Well worth the 10km hike! Absolutely beautiful. Most of the trail is easy going with a more steep and challenging last km.
  • We left at 7:30am and had a quiet trail all the way to the top with only a couple of other people there when we arrived. It was a little cloudy but we knew that was common. On the way down we encountered quite a number of people and groups on their way up, some of these groups were large so beware and prepare to wait your turn on some of the narrow parts. The path is very well maintained and marked. It took us 5.5hrs for the return trip from El Chaltern to the top and back.
  • Beautiful location. The last 1km part of the hike was tough. Watch out for the false summit! No need to carry water as you can drink the glacial run off but I wish I had brought walking poles for the downhill. Get there early and beat the crowds. If you arrive around noon, photos in the midday sun will mean shadows under your eyes and nose spoil your selfies! Don’t hike this alone at night. You will miss the views as you come in to the mountains. Also there are wild cats -pumas - in the area.
  • Great view of the Cerro Fitz Roy. Last 2km of the hike is pretty strenuous.
  • A great place in El Chalten to hike. It gets a bit strenuous towards the top over the last km ( you do of course have to hike back down to town about 10k) but the reward of a great view is worth the effort. Can be easily hiked in a day weather permitting.
