Laguna de los Tres, Los Glaciares National Park

5.0
#2 of 6 in Trails in Province of Santa Cruz
Hike to Laguna de los Tres, an emerald lagoon of glacier water on a track that reveals plenty of natural sights along the way. On your way up, you'll gain excellent views of the area's granite peaks, and perhaps even some condors flying overhead (bring your binoculars). The final stretch of the increasingly steep trail will also get you sights of the lagoon itself, with glaciers hanging from the slopes that surround it. Amazing hike 10.2 k (each way) that is achievable for medium fitness levels. The last "kilometre" of the hike is extremely steep and quite difficult if you are not experienced going downhill at that a...  more »

We plan to devote an entire day of our stay in el Calafate to el Chalten to trekking it was Laguna de los Tres but to get there we learned that to do so, it is almost obligatory to spend the night in the city given that from Calafate shipments leave 7:30 and there are about 3 hours of travel to el Chalten. You should be about 5 hours for the ascent (10 Km) and a 3 for the descent. Good rhythm and counting normal breaks that one performs to get any photo or contemplate the landscape would be not terminating travel before 7 pm and the last transport to el Calafate departs at 18:30 hs. For this reason we did rise to Laguna Capri, which was what advised us considering the time available. They are around 4 km away from the base and Fitz Roy is on the same path. Certainly it was not the same, but it is a route alternative for those who are is the same situation as us. Regarding the walk itself, it is important to check as it was the weather, the night before our ascent it had rained that certain sections were a little complicated but broadly the way can be performed without problems.

What an amazing hike to a mountain lake. Starting at 9am, the hike was 25 km, and took 8 hours with extreme winds and the last 600m involved very difficult hiking. (TIP: bring a wind vest). The landscape along the hike was spectacular, with an amazing view of Cerro Fitz Roy and a glacier. make sure you drink some of the mountain water from the streams, probably the most pristine water you will ever drink in your life.

This is a must! One of the best sceneries that I've experienced in my life. Plan to leave early from El Chalten, around 8 or 9am, as it is about a 21 kilometer trek. Camping is available at multiple locations so if you want a shorter days hike, this would be a preferred option. Unfortunately, this is a very popular spot so tent sites will most likely be limited during the spring, summer and fall seasons. Again, you must do this hike!

A full day of moderate hiking but oh what a day it is. The views of the town you leave behind are quickly replaced first by views of the river, then the distant hills and finally the view of Fitz Roy. As you continue to climb, this view only gets better. After the final push you are rewarded with a view that is truly second to none. Plan on doing this even if you have to leave your +1 behind.

A long day hike but well worth it. The last km is indeed quite hard but the view of Fitzroy up top is worth it. I'd start early to get up there just after sunrise if possible. Took us about 5-6 hours roundtrip but we were booking it.

Absolutely beautiful unless it's a cloudy day. The walk there (I wouldn't call it a hike except for the last kilometer) is rather boring.
