Trip Planner: South America / Argentina / Patagonia / Province of Santa Cruz / Los Glaciares National Park / Laguna de los Tres
Hike to Laguna de los Tres, an emerald lagoon of glacier water on a track that reveals plenty of natural sights along the way. On your way up, you'll gain excellent views of the area's granite peaks, and perhaps even some condors flying overhead (bring your binoculars). The final stretch of the increasingly steep trail will also get you sights of the lagoon itself, with glaciers hanging from the slopes that surround it. Not to be missed if good physical condition.
This was my third time in El Chalen to hike in Los Glaciares NP here. The first time was in 2010 and our guide only took us up to Campamento Poincenot. The second time in 2015, we made it past the cam... more »

Others are saying that the views and landscapes are incredible: streams, threads of water, glaciers, birds, vegetation.
We left at 7:30am and had a quiet trail all the way to the top with only a couple of other people there when we arrived. It was a little cloudy but we knew that was common. On the way down we encountered quite a number of people and groups on their way up, some of these groups were large so beware and prepare to wait your turn on some of the narrow parts. The path is very well maintained and marked. It took us 5.5hrs for the return trip from El Chaltern to the top and back.
Beautiful location. The last 1km part of the hike was tough. Watch out for the false summit! No need to carry water as you can drink the glacial run off but I wish I had brought walking poles for the downhill. Get there early and beat the crowds. If you arrive around noon, photos in the midday sun will mean shadows under your eyes and nose spoil your selfies! Don’t hike this alone at night. You will miss the views as you come in to the mountains. Also there are wild cats -pumas - in the area.
The most visited place near El Chalten. If the weather is good, worth the effort, otherwise don't bother. The last 1km part of the trail is very bad, it looks abandoned. You have to climb up and down over big wet boulders. I wish the park charge a small entrance fee and put the money to improve the trail.
A great place in El Chalten to hike. It gets a bit strenuous towards the top over the last km ( you do of course have to hike back down to town about 10k) but the reward of a great view is worth the effort. Can be easily hiked in a day weather permitting.
Nice hike with amazing views at the end. The trail is not hard until the last 1 km where you ascend 400 meters on a rocky, unstable path. The lake was frozen, which I didn't expect - I don't know if it's common to be frozen. However the laguna Suica right next to this place has the most beautiful blue color. Make sure to go there on a clear day to get the best views!
